Rhys Ready for Road to Dundee

After missing the last two Dunfermline matches through illness Rhys Breen returned to action in the Scottish Cup tie against Partick Thistle on Saturday. He was delighted to be part of a team that played so well to hold the Championship side to a draw after 90 minutes and extra time on their own patch. He is hoping that the same form can be taken onto the SPFL Trust Trophy match against Dundee:-
“It is a really hard one to take but I’m proud of the boys. Even the gaffer said that after the game. I thought the work rate and the way we played on a difficult pitch was amazing. The spirits are still high, we cannot let that affect us as we go on to the game on Tuesday.
“From Deniz (Mehmet) all the way to the front three and even the boys who didn’t get on , everybody played a part. Sometimes I think you learn more from a loss than you do by winning every week.”
It was an eventful game for the 23 year old who had several goalscoring chances and was involved in the incident that led to the Pars being awarded a 42nd minute penalty. His defensive partner Kyle Benedictus converted from the spot to ensure a half time lead.
“I was just trying to lose my man when I got put down again. I didn’t even realise that it was a penalty. When the referee gave the decision I thought I had been outside the box when it happened but he pointed to the spot.”
Rhys’ opportunities to get on the scoresheet began with an eighth minute attempt on goal, a header that went wide right. Then he was on the end of a short-taken corner that Joe Chalmers crossed into the box in 36 minutes. In the second half it was Rhys who got two attempts from another short-taken corner that unfortunately the Partick keeper Jamie Sneddon saved. Rhys continued:-
“You need to take your chances in these kinds of situations. You don’t get them often and when you do, you have to take them and obviously that can change the game.”
When the match went to penalties Rhys wasn’t first up to take one but he claimed that he would have been happy to take one if needed:-
“I would rather let the other boys do it, I don’t really have the heart for that but if it comes to it I will take my penalty.”
After their 120 minutes of football Rhys and the squad were in for a recovery day on Sunday to get ready to go again on Tuesday. Thoughts of the cup exit are behind them already and Rhys stressed:-
“In the changing room the spirit is still high. We are not going to let that knock out affect us.”
