Kyle’s goal to top the group

Saturday, 14th Nov 2020

“Everybody wants to play their part. We can’t just rely on the strikers like we did pretty much all of last season, when Nizzy scored so many goals for us.

Having been brought up as a Celtic fan, last season’s Betfred Cup gave Kyle Turner the satisfaction of playing at Celtic Park. This season much as he would fancy another trip there, he is just focused on qualifying on full points and in so doing being seeded not to meet the Old Firm, Aberdeen or Motherwell in round two. He said:-

“We want to get through the group and if we win on Saturday, we win the group. We want to win every game we play and make it four out of four.

“We drew Celtic last year so that illustrates how close you are to a big tie if you progress. It could be another Celtic or Rangers again, that would be good but it would be good to try and miss them this time - or at least play them a wee bit later!

“It’s just the luck of the draw and if things go your way then you could have a great chance to have a real run in the competition. We’ll take anyone.”

Alongside Kyle only Ryan Dow and Josh Edwards from that trip to Celtic Park who could possibly start against Clyde on Saturday given that Aaron Comrie and Lewis Martin are injured but the confidence that they showed in August last year is present again after going on a run of seven games undefeated. He continued:-

“We wouldn’t be scared of playing anyone with the way we are playing right now. It would obviously be much tougher playing a Celtic or Rangers than another team, but we’ll fancy ourselves against pretty much anyone.

“I think you saw that against Kilmarnock. Although they had a weakened team, we went down there and won 3-0 against a Premiership team.”

Now in his second season as a professional footballer Kyle felt that he did reasonably well last season but acknowledged that now it’s about kicking on, trying to be better than last season and scoring goals again.

“I haven’t scored any goals yet and that’s something I’m trying to build on. Hopefully I can get a few more for the team. I scored six goals up to September last year and then didn’t score again, so that’s been a little frustrating.

“I want to chip in with goals and help the team. However, as long as we’re winning, I can’t complain. It just needs something to drop. I’ve had a couple of efforts that have been blocked and hopefully it’ll turn at some point.”

Although he earned a penalty at Alloa, not being able to find the net is frustrating Kyle he watches others round about chipping in:-

“We can’t just rely on the two strikers all the time. I need to chip in, as with the other guys in midfield. Muz [Euan Murray] is showing the way with how he’s been scoring. Everybody wants to play their part. We can’t just rely on the strikers like we did pretty much all of last season, when Nizzy scored so many goals for us.

“Everybody understands everybody. We are well organised, everyone knows their role and it’s been a positive start, albeit we need to keep our feet on the ground.”

Last Saturday’s draw against Ayr United ended the Pars perfect start to the season after six wins out of six and certainly served as the kind of reminder Kyle referred to:-

“Somerset has always been a tough place to go and always will be. We were on top most of the game I thought but it was just one of those days, we couldn’t convert a chance. But we could have gone there, created chances and got beat 1-0, so you take the point on the road.

“We had a couple of tough games in the first few matches. We had Inverness, who were good last season, and Ayr United, who were a top four side.”
