Wee Yin’s big impact

Sunday, 30th Sep 2018

“Their defender has made a mistake and I’ve pounced on it. If I’d missed that then I think I would have retired!

The ‘Big Yin’ is undoubtedly the most famous Connolly but the ‘Wee Yin’ at Dunfermline certainly made an impact on the Glasgwegian visitors to East End Park on Friday night.

After the 1-0 win over Partick Thistle, Aidan Connolly was presented with the Man of the Match Award and having waited a while for his chance to start for the first team, he certainly appears to be taking it.

Aidan admitted his 69th minute winner was the very first that he has scored at any level for Dunfermline, he commented:-

“I couldn’t even score a goal in the reserves! Sometimes that is just what happens - it comes at a good time. It’s all about the team at the end of the day - then individual things - but it is good to get a goal.

“The manager has been telling me to get in the box more to get those opportunities and I just made a run into the box. Their defender has made a mistake and I’ve pounced on it. If I’d missed that then I think I would have retired!

“I thought the first half was kind of even, obviously we had a lot more corners in the first half but second half I thought that we were the better team. We pressed them, had a few chances and Louis (Longridge) put a lot of good balls in.”

The 23 year old who signed from York City in June this year had a second chance to score but hit the post. It is good that the team is creating chances and players getting into the box but Aidan confessed that was a missed opportunity:-

“To be fair, I should have scored. A lot of people say my right foot is for standing on - but I should still have put it in the net. It came quite quick to me, but it’s unlucky. The boys aren’t giving me too much stick for that - I think they are keeping my confidence high and stay positive!”

The win took Dunfermline to eight points but after seven league matches they are eight points behind leaders Ayr United. Aidan continued:-

“I think we have been unlucky in some recent games, like against Morton in last week, so it was good to get the three points. I thought we played well on Friday, but if you win ugly that’s all that matters.

“Every game is important and we want to build momentum. Next week we’ve got Falkirk so hopefully we can go there and get a result. They will be fighting for every point and sometimes it is harder when it is like that.

“I have played there before and it is on astro, a difficult surface but hopefully we can go there and get a result.

“When I was last in this division it was a really tight league and it’s just the same now. It’s different now because last time there was Rangers in the league, who everyone expected to win it, but no one can really call a winner.

“In my opinion we will be up there towards the end of the season. I don’t think our position in the league right now is a realistic reflection of our squad and hopefully we can kick on.

“The players believed - even when results weren’t going so well - that we were better than what the league shows and we got what we deserved on Friday night.

“Sometimes you get a bit of luck in football and that was the luck that we deserved.”
