Ryan Scully’s quest for first team football this week brought him back to the club where he has played his most football. Ironically after just two days back at East End Park, his second Dunfermline Athletic debut was away to the club he had just left - Morton.
The 26 year old keeper was delighted to be back in a Dunfermline strip and although the strip said number 40 there was little doubt that the number one was what he wanted. 40 is the number of first team appearances Ryan has made in the 50 months since leaving Dunfermline after his season long loan in 2014-2015. He told the media:-
“Every player wants to play football. There was no other reason for me to move other than football. Being at Dunfermline previously I have good memories of the place and obviously the relationship with the fans.
“For me it all about playing football and it was good to get a clean sheet on my debut.
“It was probably better coming back after just a few days away. You don’t get time to think about it. I travelled in on Thursday, signed and went through our first training session.
“A lot of things are going through your head. Then the game appears on Saturday and it’s against your former club. It is probably the best thing that I didn’t have too much time to think about it.
“It was a bit of a test, good to get the clean sheet, disappointed not to get the three points. We probably had the better chances in the game. That is something we need to improve because three points are massive in this league. The more we get the more we can start looking at pushing forward.”
Not everybody at Cappielow on Saturday appreciated seeing Ryan in a Dunfermline strip. He was not surprised by the ‘welcome’:-
“That is to be expected. There is no ill towards the club, it was purely football why I left. I knew it was probably going to be a little hostile. It was fine and at the end of the day it was probably the best result for both teams.”
A new manager for Ryan and many new team mates:-
“There have been a few changes, there are only three of the boys here from my last time but there are still the same old faces in the background like the kitman Mo (Hutton).
“It is good to be back and the boys have been brilliant with me as well. They helped me settle in pretty quickly.”
Ryan feels that Saturday’s clean sheet will build confidence and that is important given that there is a lot to play for between now and the end of the season
“It is such a tight league, three points are massive and these are the games where you want that win when there is not much between the two teams and when you have the better chances.
“We know what we need to do now. It was a good clean sheet, good defensive display and a good platform to base the rest of our season. It is just at the other end of the park that we need to tidy up more in the final third and get the goals.
“It is not easy when you are going through a barren spell in front of goal. Boys kind of snatch at chances as well. The gaffer has been instilling in the boys to keep their confidence up and not shy away from chances and the goals will come. Once that happens we will start pushing up towards the higher end of the league.”
