Setpiece celebration for Rhys

Monday, 21st Mar 2016

"You look at Peterhead and wonder when they are going to slip up but they just keep grinding out results.

Rhys McCabe's match winner against Cowdenbeath just nine minutes from full time was greeted by much relief, both on and off the park. The 23 year old former Rangers youth, who joined Dunfermline in September told the media:-

"It was good to come on and try and create a chance. We knew that it was going to come, obviously we didn't want it to come that late. With the way the pitch was, the conditions etc it was always going to be a tough game and that there would maybe only be one goal in it."

The 81st minute free kick handed Rhys the opportunity to be a hero and he talked about his approach to the chance from 20 yards out and the reaction of his team mates to the goal:-

"I think it was going in the other side but the charger closed it down, hit off him and went in. It had a chance of going in anyway and I am delighted to get on and get a goal. I don't know what happened next, there were fists in my hair, fingers up my nose but it is a good group so it was good to get the goal and have the lads celebrate together.

"The three points are all important especially at this time of the season. We have just been trying to take it game by game but with the games narrowing down now it is mostly about to get results."

Rhys only had to suffer 15 minutes on the much criticised Central Park pitch, but he claimed that it was the same for both teams.

"It was firm but very bobbly so you knew that there would be mistakes throughout the game on both parts especially at the back. We set up before the game knowing that there was going to be a game where a mistake might make the difference. Our defenders did really well today and it was good for them to get a clean sheet as well."

Rhys was reluctant to take the plaudits for the win:-

"It is a team effort and it is my job to try and help the team. The most important thing is the result, if it means we get an own goal or a 30 yard wonder strike it doesn't matter. The boys are doing well and we all have a good attitude. The league is definitely not won yet, we are still two or three games away but we will make sure that the boys are fighting strong until the end of the season.

"You look at Peterhead and wonder when they are going to slip up but they just keep grinding out results, similar to ourselves. We just need to focus on us and deal with one game at a time then the league will be ours.

"With it being a local derby the fans came out in numbers. A big thanks to all our fans, it must be good for them to see us winning most games. It is not finished yet and we will not party until it is finished."
