Ryan's bottle causes cup doubt

Saturday, 23rd Nov 2013

I would like to play because it is a big game in the Scottish Cup.

Ryan Williamson starts

Ryan Williamson had the rare distinction of collecting the bottle of wine for being Man of the Match on his first senior start. The 17 year old promised to gift the bottle to kitman Mo Hutton for his birthday when he spoke to the website after the game:-

"I am very happy; can't complain anyway. I got told yesterday that if Ross Millen wasn't going to be fit then I would be in the team. That is when my nerves started to kick in. I stayed at my Gran's last night and got more sleep than I thought I would. When I got to East End Park today John Potter told me that I was playing."

Ryan's dad Andy played for Dunfermline over 20 years ago and ahead of the game Ryan received his advice on text:-

"He said just to keep doing what I have been doing for the 20s, play my own game. He was good about it as I would have expected. At the kick off I was nervous but as soon as the game kicked off I just felt myself easing into the game. I was very pleased overall."

Ryan had to be pleased since Jim Jefferies had the choices of bringing in the on loan Dundee United defender Luke Johnston or reverting to a previous tactic in playing Andy Geggan at right back.

"It is a good thing for me, I cannot complain about that. It is a perfect situation especially with me only being in my first year of full time football. The fact that the Manager has that much trust in me is great me for me."

Ryan crosses for the second goal

Ryan who had spent two seasons in the Celtic youth system before joining Dunfermline attracted the Parkhead club's attentions at a recent U20s match. He has many admirers and Jim Jefferies is one of them but the Pars gaffer admitted to telling off Ryan for making the second Dunfermline goal:-

"The ball was played back and I should have shot. I decided to go (into the byeline) and it worked out alright for me to be fair but if it hadn't he would have let me know about it. Trust me, if I had shot it could have gone anywhere so I am happy that I did what I did."

Ryan's cross went into the net off central defender Ewan Moyes to make in 2-0 just at the midway point in the first half but in the second half Ryan had chances of his own:-

"There were a couple. I came in on my left foot and had a go but sadly one of them was blocked and the other the keeper made a good save. If I eventually manage to play week in week out hopefully I will get my goal."

Everybody who had seen Ryan playing in the pre season friendlies, the league match against Arbroath as a late sub or in the under 20s would not be surprised with Ryan's success.

"Ross Millen has been doing excellently this year. I am only seventeen and he is more experienced than me so I fully understand how he is playing ahead of me at the moment. I can't complain."

Ryan should have been playing in the SFA Youth cup against Cowdenbeath on Sunday and after 90 minutes of first team football Ryan is concerned that his starting debut might mean he is excluded from the cup tie. Allan Smith is another who is eligible but likely to be in the same boat. On loan pair Jordan Moore and Ryan Ferguson are also available however.

"John Potter has said that he will have a word with me. I took a knock on my hip and I will have to see how it is. I would like to play because it is a big game in the Scottish Cup. Everyone is wanting to play but we will just see how it is."
