Pick it up for playoff fight

Monday, 29th Mar 2021

Craig Wighton:- “We are fighting for the playoffs, there are a few teams below us who have gone on a good run and we can easily drop out of that fight if we do not pick it up.”

If Dunfermline play as badly as they did in the first fifteen minutes of the second half at Dundee, they will not make the playoffs has warned the Pars on loan striker Craig Wighton. After Craig had set up Kevin O’Hara for a third minute goal and then scored a special second himself within three minutes, Dunfermline went on to lose the match. Craig who has now scored four goals in six matches for the Pars commented:-

“We got off to a good start obviously then we sat off the game and let them back into it. The first fifteen minutes of the second half were just not good enough, that cost us at the end of the day.”

Despite Owain Fôn Williams strenuous efforts to keep Osman Sow out with a remarkable double save, Jason Cummings headed home to reduce Dundee’s deficit ten minutes before the break. Two goals in two minutes, from Danny Mullen in 54 and Lee Ashcroft in 56 minutes, stunned the Fifers and after that Craig felt that Dunfermline were chasing the game:-

“It took us going 3-2 down to bring us back to life. That is the frustrating thing. We lost goals at setpieces giving them free headers. We are disappointed to be honest, there is not much more we can say.”

There are seven league games remaining of this 27 match league season and none of these will be for the feint hearted:-

“It is so tight because there are so many teams fighting for the play off places. Every game is important, we got off to a great start and it was looking good. It is disappointing to throw three points away like the way we did.

“It is good to get off the mark early and score a few goals but there have not been enough points along the way. That is the biggest frustration for everyone. At the end of the day we are fighting for the playoffs, there are a few teams below us who have gone on a good run and we can easily drop out of that fight if we do not pick it up.”

Craig signed for Dundee at the age of ten while still attending Harris Academy. He came through the youth ranks at Dundee, made his first team debut aged 16 in October 2013. His family are Dundee supporters and that was the reason he turned down a move to local rivals Dundee United. Craig had not not really thought too much about scoring against his old club, it did not alter his take from the game, still deeply disappointed and desperately hoping to make up for it in the away game to Raith Rovers:-

“It’s a massive game on Tuesday now. It is good that it comes around so quick so that we can bounce back. That is all that we can do. If we play like we did in that fifteen minute spell then we are not going to win any football matches. We need to be at our best for longer periods.

“We know that we need to go into that fighting for the three points. It is not going to be easy. We went two nil up at Dundee and took our foot off the gas at the start of the second half. It has killed us so we need to be at it for the ninety minutes and hopefully we can get the three points.”
