Managers Post Man United

Saturday, 17th Jul 2010

17/07/10:- "I felt we stood off them and gave them far too much room in the first half. Allied with the goals we were giving away it was only going to finish in one thing.

Jim McIntyre and Ole Gunnar Solksjaer

Jim McIntyre was asked what he had learned from the home defeat to a Manchester United XI.

"Well, our defending was poor; the goals we gave away in the last couple of games have just been terrible goals. There has been poor defending as a team and when you do that it is so difficult to come back after giving goals away like that."

Had the team been nervous given the opposition they were facing?

"It looked that way, I would agree with that. We just weren't on our normal game, it was poor - there was no defending it.  In the second half we asked them to go and have a go. They did that to be fair, at least they picked the tempo up a bit. We started closing down higher up the park.

"I felt we stood off them and gave them far too much room in the first half. Allied with the goals we were giving away it was only going to finish in one thing."

The Manager took time, for the second game running, to praise his 18 year old right winger:-

"I thought young Paul Willis did well again but other than that the only positive is another ninety minutes under their belts.

"We have Wednesday night to look forward to now and then towards Saturday."

Third Division Arbroath are the opposition on Saturday in the Alba Challenge Cup but before that it's Aberdeen. The Manager explained why the pre season schedule seemed so tough:-

"We need to get big teams in for our friendlies because that brings in a bit of revenue. That is why we have done that - it is another ninety minutes no matter who you play. It is all about getting ready for what will be our opening game against Arbroath."

OLE GUNNAR SOLKSJAER

After scoring in just 21 seconds, Manchester United's Ole Gunnar Solksjaer felt that his team got off to a great start but things changed after the break:-

"We got put under a bit of pressure second half. They got a goal in the end - a nice goal as well.

"We always have good players to work with - that's the bonus but the nice bit of the job. I have got to make sure that they focus all the time because it is a big step up to the first team. There are big demands and the standards have got to be set high."

Ole hopes that his team can go on to follow in the footsteps of other Man United successes:-

"Sometimes you get groups growing up together, it's a good thing. We all remember the class of 92 - Becks, Gary, Phil, Nicky, Scholesy and Giggsy. Now Johnny Evans, Darron Gibson, Fraizer Campbell (Sunderland) and Danny Simpson (Newcastle United) have come through and are playing in the Premierleague now. To have a good group together is a nice way of developing players as well."

Ole didn't want to suggest that there might be another class of '92:-

"No, it is difficult to say from year to year but it was a lively first half anyway."
