Jim Leishman Post Rangers

Thursday, 21st Sep 2006

Two genuine mistakes. Even the second goal, Kris Boyd using his body weight to turn the player and have a grea

"We knew that Prso and Barry Ferguson weren't going to play. We expected two or three changes but it doesn't matter if Rangers make changes they still have good players coming in. Just like Celtic last night they have players getting a lot of money coming in. You expect them to do the job but I wasn't fussy about Rangers I was more disappointed with our team.

"I was disappointed because we can play a lot better than we did tonight. We gave the ball away far too easily. Apart from a couple of efforts I thought we contained Rangers well and then we changed it with Owen Morrison and Scott Muirhead going upfront. We watched Rangers on Sunday and Hibs had the two wide players getting the ball in the box but unfortunately just as we did that we lost a goal. Jim Hamilton tried a header back and the deflection or connection off Sol (Bamba) gave Rangers a goal and they got a lift from that.

"The players heads went down after goal. Having made the changes we did not get a chance for our the game plan. We planned the substitutes to come on and try and get a bit width, get in behind Rangers and stop Smith and Hutton getting forward.

"Two genuine mistakes. Even the second goal, Kris Boyd using his body weight to turn the player and have a great strike at goal.

"The players are really down because they did not perform as well as they could. I am more disappointed tonight than I was against Ayr United because our team had nothing to lose tonight but unfortunately we did and good luck to Rangers.

"From my point of view it wasn't a great game but we must look forward to Saturday now. Out of the three games, Celtic away, Rangers at home, this is probably the biggest game coming up.

Freddie Daquin and Jim Leishman

"St Mirren have endeavour, the will to win, passion. They are a strong team with some good players who are making the most of coming up. They are favourites, they have got ten points."

Leish discounted the suggestion that this was a vital match:-

"I have taken over with three games to go and it has been vital. It is crucial with three games to go!

"What we will find now is that we will have disappointed players. They will have to go and perform, if they do not perform they are not playing because we have got competition. We have not had that but that is the power that we have now with selection. You can knock on the door every week, Friday, Monday but you are not playing."
