Gregor great to be at Dunfermline

Thursday, 3rd Jul 2014

Gregor Buchanan has signed a one year deal at Dunfermline for the start of the 2014-15 season. Leaving fellow League One side Airdrieonians for the Pars meant it was a change from part time to full time football.

The central defender took time out during day two of pre season to tell this website:-

"It has been good and great to get back into training and meet all the boys. Everybody knows that pre season isn't fun and games to start with but we are working hard towards our objectives for the season. The only way that you are going to achieve that is by putting the effort in from the start. Neil McCann and John Potter are working us hard as was fully expected and we are just looking forward to the games starting.

"You know that it is going to be tough being pre season; every football club is different but we have had the balls out. We are doing our runs, then a bit of ball work and then running again. It has been enjoyable. A lot of teams run you into the ground but it has not been like that. There has been a good bit of banter with the boys and coaching staff. It has been good all round.

"Neil and Potts have been getting everybody going. It is a big season for us but there has been a positive attitude right from the start. We have another two days of double sessions but I am looking forward to meeting the fans on Saturday. That will be my first chance to meet them so I am looking forward to the weekend."

Gregor was an Airdrieonian player the last time he stepped out at East End Park and he was reminded that Pars fans often do not show much affection for Diamonds' players. Steven McDougall, Joe Cardle and, some time ago, Andy Smith are possibly the best known to have arrived by the same route but Gregor was fully aware of the rivalry:-

"I knew that was the case right from the start but I am a Dunfermline player now and my friends and family will be supporting me. I need to do it on the pitch to get the reaction from the fans but I have no doubts that I can do that."

At the age of 24, Dunfermline is Gregor's first full time club; but to be a professional football player has been his ambition since he was a child. Gregor made 66 appearances during his two seasons at Airdrie but is now looking to get off to a good start with his career at Dunfermline. First up will be the Petrofac Training (Challenge) Cup first round tie at home to Fife rivals Raith Rovers. He commented:-

"It is tough wee draw to start with but it is one that everybody will look forward to knowing that Dunfermline v Raith Rovers will be a bit of rivalry. It could be a good start to the season if we can kick it off well.

"Raith Rovers have signed a lot of good players but have a look around our changing room and we have a very good and large squad. We will be positive going into that game. There will be a few friendlies before then although the Manager might chop and change the team a bit just to get everybody game time. The main thing is to be ready when Raith Rovers come to East End."

Commenting on his experiences as an opponent coming to play Dunfermline at home, Gregor said:-

"It was great coming to play at East End Park, it is a great place to play football. I think a lot of teams get a lift when they come here just because of the surroundings. To be here as a home team is going to be very exciting."

Dunfermline's reliance on youth has also impressed Gregor:-

"I have been surprised just how good the youngsters are. Some of them have some fantastic ability and this is probably only the start of their career. I am not saying this in a negative way but the only way is up for a lot of those guys. They will be looking for another solid season and to be part of it all."
