Jim Jefferies new look Pars kicked off their competitive season on the new state of the art artificial surface at Station Park, Forfar. His side included only four players who started the last SPL match back in May.against Kilmarnock. Jordan McMillan, Andy Dowie, Ryan Thomson and Joe Cardle being the four survivors although Andy Kirk was on the bench then as well.

Great news for the Pars was the return to action of keeper Paul Gallacher who hadn`t played since being injured at Tynecastle in December 2011.

Dick Campbell brought in goalkeeper Derek Soutar from Formartine United.  Maybe no one told the 31 year old former Dundee stopper about Forfar`s new pitch!

Dunfermline kicked off but it was Forfar who were quickly in on goal after Danny Denholm travelled down the left with great speed to test Gallacher after only 49 seconds. Gavin Swankie sent a low free kick round the Pars wall in third minute but Gallacher held well.

Dunfermline replied with a driving run by Ryan Wallace and then in six minutes might have done better when firstly Joe Cardle and then Andy Geggan sent crosses across the face of the home goalmouth.

Forfar`s new signing from Aberdeen, Mick Dunlop tested Gallacher again from an eighth minute corner conceded by Andy Dowie. The keeper did well as the big defender met the ball at the far post with a downward on target header.

In tenth minute Stephen Husband collected the Pars first yellow card of the season for a challenge that referee Kevin Clancy did not like. Soutar was brought into action to hold a low Wallace cross but it was at the other end that the first goal was to be scored. A sweeping ball to the left was picked up by Denholm and his shot was beaten away by Gallacher but Omar KADER was well placed in the centre of the box to ram the ball home from 14 yards. 1-0 Forfar.

The home supports joy did not last for long as the Pars hit back within three minutes. Cardle`s tenacity dispossessed right back Mark McCulloch on the left edge of the penalty box and he then cut the ball back for Ryan WALLACE to net low to the left. 1-1.

A Dunfermline free kick in 19th minute was sent whizzing past the left goalpost from 25 yards by Husband. Then central defender Michael Bolochoweckyj made a good block on Cardle`s shot, that was followed by a Falkingham effort low past the left post.

A 34th minute corner sent over by Cardle from the right was missed by Dowie who just mistimed a high jump but Potter was behind him but his header went over the top. The Pars took the lead in the next minute when BARROWMAN latched on to a through ball up the right channel and he swept it past Soutar to net at the far post.

Five minutes from the interval Iain Campbell struck a powerful shot from distance that ended up just outside Gallacher`s left hand post but it was a close one as Swankie slid in and had he got a touch could have equalised.

Thomson laid off a neat ball for Cardle on the left side of the box and given space he tried a chip that narrowly failed to find the net. Forfar continued to compete and cause the visiting defence to make some rather desperate clearances but they went in one down at the break.

Half Time: Forfar Athletic 1 Dunfermline 2

In 51 minutes Cardle`s long hanging ball to the right was caught by Geggan and from his cross Dunfermline earned a corner as Bolochoweckyj headed the cross behind. Dowie hit the crossbar when the corner came in and his initial header was blocked.

Forfar broke and scored on the counterattack through Danny DENHOLM. The Forfar no.11 raced through and placed the ball past Gallacher as he tried to narrow the angle. 2-2

Cardle`s cross in 57 minutes won another corner on the right and this John Potter`s header was blocked by Soutar at the left goalpost. Dunfermline kept up the pressure but McMillan`s attempt on goal went well over the crossbar.

Forfar had another good opportunity in 65 minutes when a cross from the left was smashed on target but off the back of McMillan for a corner on the right. The referee blew the corner up for the challenge on the Gallacher by Dunlop. This clearly demonstrated that Gall was feeling back to full strength but in the next minute he had the misfortune to tip SWANKIE`s cross from the left byeline into his own net. 2-3

With their tails up the Loons should have increased their lead immediately after going ahead. The ball fell nicely for Charlie King but he failed to take the chance from just eight yards out.

Andy Kirk and Chris Kane replaced Ryan Wallace and Stephen Husband and then with quarter of an hour to go Barrowman was put through the middle but just when it looked like Dunfermline would be back in the cup tie the striker scooped the ball over the crossbar.

The Pars final sub of the afternoon was Alex Whittle for Ryan Thomson but the clock was beginning to run away from the First Division club. An 85th minute free kick was floated in by Cardle but Barrowman`s attempt to head on target was prevented and Joe`s follow up was sent wide right.

There was another chance when a fine ball into the box was headed in the direction of Kirk in front of goal but he turned the ball over the bar. A heavy shower came pouring in on 90 minutes to thoroughly drown Dunfermline`s competitive start. It was the home fans and manager Dick Campbell who were ecstatic at the final whistle which came after four added minutes.
