An update from the Lifeline on last season`s winners

We have opened the voting for the Player of the Year Awards for this season 2020/21 and it might be helpful to reflect back to last season’s awards when making your choices for this season. The Covid restrictions meant the usual award ceremony was cancelled and, indeed, with two of the prize winners being at new clubs that also proved to be a major hurdle.

THE JOE NELSON DAFC YOUNG PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2019/20

LEWIS McCANN

The fans’ choice, for the Joe Nelson Young Player of the Year was Lewis McCann. With the players operating within their Covid “bubble” getting access to the players is very difficult, so we were delighted to, eventually, get the trophy handed over to Lewis. Once again, the Lifeline is very grateful to the family of the late Joe Nelson for sponsoring this award and we are grateful to Barbara Anne Nelson and her family for their continued support.

Lewis made an immediate impact on joining the Pars in May 2018 making it into the first team squad. During the 2019/20 season he made 7 starts and 10 further appearances coming on from the bench. An under 19 and 21 international for Northern Ireland further endorses the potential for this young talent. He continues to be a big part of the squad this season as well although his appearances have been more limited, thus far. A strong physical unit who is no slouch going forward appearing mature beyond his years. We hope Lewis goes on to have a long and rewarding career with the Pars.

So, who is your choice for Young Player of the Year for 2020/21?

DAFC PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2019/20

KEVIN NISBET

There was little doubt among the Pars fans last season as to their choice for Player of the Year. Kevin Nisbet may not have had the longest career at Dunfermline but he made a huge impact and even his subsequent transfer to Hibs was probably a welcome blessing for the Pars accountants as the Covid crisis hit the club. Kevin was a surprise transfer signing from local rivals, Raith Rovers where he had scored 34 goals in 46 appearances in season 2018/19. Kevin continued his goal scoring form in the Championship scoring 23 times in 32 appearances before the season was prematurely ended.

He showed that he could score all kinds of goals with either foot and his head. The young striker has good pace and like all good strikers that sense of being in the right place at the right time in the 6 yard area. There was more to Kevin’s game than just scoring as he was often a provider and never scared to do a shift getting back to defend. It was, however, his goals which marked him out as a top player and we will all remember some great goals notably his goal against Dundee at home in January. A worthy winner of the Player of the Year for season 2019/20.

The Lifeline are again grateful to Ian Baker and his family for sponsoring this year’s award, thanks Ian.

We wish Kevin all the best at his new club, Hibs and, hopefully. We will see him in the Scottish international team in the Euro championships in the summer!

Will it be another striker for this seasons main Player of the Year Award or have other players got themselves in the running?

DAFC GOAL OF THE SEASON 2019/20

LEE ASHCROFT

The goal of the season last year voted by the fans was centre back, Lee Ashcroft, for his stunning strike against Ayr Utd in October 2019 which the Pars won 3-2. Lee’s goal was one of 10 goals that he scored in his 164 appearances over his 4 seasons with Dunfermline. The commanding centre back was a firm favourite with Pars fans and he played a huge part in keeping the Pars in the Championship. The Lifeline are grateful to Ron Spence of St Michaels Tippers for sponsoring this award.

Our goal of the season award will be fought out between 8 great goals, from Fraser Murray, Declan McManus, Kevin O`Hara, Craig Wighton and Aaron Comrie.

Voting is open now until Saturday 24th April with the winners announced shortly afterwards.
