Youth lose SPL Reserve League match at Gayfield Park.

Gayfield Arbroath

DUNDEE UNITED  5 DUNFERMLINE 0

This SPL Reserve match was played in Arbroath on Tuesday afternoon; the young Pars team playing with their backs to the strong wind in the first half. United had the first chance when a long ball looped over Patrick Halpin but Neil Fenwick reacted quickly to clear.

In 19th minute Halpin almost got the opener when his cross-cum-shot skimmed the back post. Euan McLean in the United goal was having difficulty clearing the ball far and as a consequence much of the play was restricted to his half.

At the midway stage of the half Sean Muhsin created a problem for the opposition when his corner in from the right ended up in a good old fashioned stramash when Dunfermline had a couple of good chances.

Next in 25 minutes, a dangerous Nick Phinn free kick allowed Iain Williamson a header on target but McLean saved. Then another Phinn free kick found Davie Muir but when nicely placed 7 yards out he failed to make contact.

United had managed to win some corners despite play being predominantly in their half.  Dunfermline coped well enough until Lee WILKIE`s physical presence managed to get a header on target in 36 minutes.

In the second half it was the visitors turn to cope with the elements and they paid dearly for not taking their chances when they had the wind advantage. A long crossfield ball deceived Halpin and the right winger unleashed a shot that Paterson had no chance of stopping.

Before the Fifers had time to re-group in the next minute, 53rd, a long ball into the box saw Fenwick muscled off the ball and United were in for their third. This time Gregg BURNETT rifled in from 25 yards.

Dunfermline settled and Muir had an effort at goal but then a long ball down the middle had to be defended by Fenwick.  The ball broke to Ross GARDINER  to make it 4-0 with a 20 yard volley fifteen minutes from the end.

Three minutes later another Fenwick clearance was picked up by SMITH who struck, through a ruck of players into the bottom corner.
