Dunfermline Athletic

Dom Thomas’ leading role

Wednesday, 14th Jul 2021

“I am learning every day and there is nobody better to learn off gather with the experience from the level he played that. The gaffer is hard on me but that is what I want …….

Obviously a defeat is never good but Dom Thomas feels that Dunfermline are building and learning with every game. Speaking after the 1-0 defeat to a new look St Mirren side in Paisley on Tuesday night, Dom commented:

“St Mirren are a great team and you can see from the changes that they have made that they have strong squad. They did well last season and I am sure that they will do well this season.

“We came here and gave a good account of ourselves and showed that we can play good football. You do not want to lose any game but we are still learning this new shape and new style of play. For us in spells we did really well keeping possession against a good team.

“It is good to come here and challenge yourself against a team who are eventually where we want eventually to be. There were a lot of good things and positives.

“It is a step up playing against good players and you need to be that bit better. To lose a goal from a cross that really defined the game was really disappointing but what we been working on in training is starting to show on the pitch and I feel we are getting better and better every game and every training session.

“It is a new system and we have new players. Everybody is in good spirits and we feel that we are going places.”

Dom agreed that the system worked better on Tuesday night than it had on Saturday in the 4-2 win over Partick Thistle:-

“Yes definitely. We were playing against a good outfit but we had great spells in the game with long periods of possession which is good, albeit we didn’t create as many chances as we would have liked. We kept the ball well and had good chances against a good team. There are lots of positives for us to take and a lot of things to build on.”

Dom has been played in the centre of midfield for the first two matches under Peter Grant and he said that he was happy to get plenty of the ball in a role that is new to him.

“I am learning every day and there is nobody better to learn off gather with the experience from the level he played that. The gaffer is hard on me but that is what I want, it is good to be in there at the heart of it, you see more of the ball and you can create more things.

“It is an exciting season ahead for us. Obviously we started with three points at the weekend, we have not picked up any on Tuesday night but we will look ahead now to Saturday as an opportunity to pick up another three points with a good performance.”

Dom has been enjoying the new management under Peter Grant, a coach he first encountered while collecting his six Scotland under 21 caps in 2017:-

“I have worked with him before and he was great then. He is really passionate about the game and he knows the way he wants to play. I think his style of play really suits me so it has been great so far and long may it continue.”

The former Celtic and Motherwell youth has worn the captain’s armband for the first two matches of this 2021-2022 season but the manager has not made any formal announcement about club captain. Now aged 25, when asked about it Dom was humble in his reply:-

“It is a great bunch of boys so to lead them out is an honour since it is a big club and hopefully a successful one. We have not actually spoken about anything officially but every game that they give me as an honour and a pleasure.”
