Confidence high for Firhill return

Friday, 5th Apr 2019

Dan desperate to be more consistent over both halves and to turn his chances into goals.

Former Partick Thistle player Danny Devine claims that it is up to the Dunfermline players to figure out what went wrong in their last two games and put that right with a win this weekend against the club he left last summer.

Danny scored against them in the 3-0 home win over his previous club at the end of February and he felt that goal, his first in front of the home fans, had been a long time coming.

“It was good to get on the score sheet, good to help the team, chip in with the goals and at the end of it take the three points.

“I nearly scored the last time we played at Firhill, I had one that came off the crossbar. Although I am happy enough that I am getting on the end of them, hopefully I can start turning these chances into goals.”

Danny confessed that to lose after a five match winning run was a huge disappointment to the players.

“To win five games without conceding a goal was brilliant. The break came at a bad time for us but the boys know that is not an excuse. We are not trying to use that as an excuse, we are just disappointed that when we came back after the break and not done as well as were doing before.

“That is down to us as players. We know that the last two games have not been good enough especially the first half of those two games. We know that we are going to have to start games a lot better if we want to take anything from them.

“I don’t know why our first half performances have not been as good as the second half’s. Even in the games when we went on that run, we were scoring our goals in the second half. To be honest I do not know why that is but it is down to us as a group of players to be more consistent over both halves. It is something we have noticed, worked on and hopefully that shows on Saturday.”

Although currently outside a play off place, Danny has not given up hope of making the play offs.

“It is not impossible. If it can still happen mathematically with six games left, we know that in this league anything can happen. Anyone can beat anyone, you just need to look at the results at the weekend with Alloa beating Ross County and Queens defeating Dundee United. They play offs are still up for grabs, we have to play Inverness and the boys are still optimistic.

“It is up to us. We need to rely on people to do us a favour but we just to concentrate on us and taking three points.”

Fifth placed Pars play ninth placed Jags but the 26 year old Irishman is well aware that league places mean little in indicating outcomes in the Championship.

“I have played with some of the lads there and they are all good quality players. They will be bitterly disappointed with where they are in the league. They are very good going forward, they have a lot of ability there, they have a lot of experience and a lot of goals in their team when you look at the two experienced strikers.

“We know that it was not going to be easy. We found that out the last time there.

“Positions in the league don’t really matter, you just need to go there as if you are playing the team at the top of the league and go out and try and force our game on them.

“Hopefully we can pick up all three points, we need other results to go our way also but as I say with the results this season all over the place, anything can happen.

The mood in the camp is still extremely positive and Danny agreed that the confidence levels have grown.

“I think it definitely is the case. Before Stevie, Greg and then Callum came in results weren’t really going our way. Even when they first came in results were still going against us but one thing the new management team have come in and put in place is that we are all together, working for each other and making sure that we are each other’s backs.

“Winning breeds confidence and now that we have a few wins under our belt it breeds confidence throughout the team. Obviously looking back on the last two games, you would think that we are on a losing run and not a winning run but that is down to us as players to figure out why that happened and put it right on Saturday.”
