Cause for Celebration

Andy Geggan: "I had a great year here but a goal is a goal and who didn't want to celebrate that?"

Andy Geggan thinks about celebration

Andy Geggan spent a memorable season as an Ayr United player in 2011-2012 so it was a hard task to celebrate putting Dunfermline Athletic ahead just thirteen minutes into the Scottish Cup tie at Somerset Park on Saturday.

"I didn't want to celebrate because I love this club as well now. I had a great year here but a goal is a goal and who didn't want to celebrate that?"

Celebrating Andy Geggan goal v Ayr United

The 13th minute goal was not to be decisive and Jim Jefferies half time warnings proved correct when Michael Donald slotted away an equaliser in the 13th minute of the second half. Andy commented:-

"This is a difficult place to come as I learned in my year when teams came in the cup. We knew that they would get at us in the second half but we had the chances to finish the game off and it never happened for us. We will look forward to Wednesday and take it from there."

The fact that the tie goes to a replay on Wednesday night at East End Park is no surprise to anyone who has knowledge of the scalps Ayr have taken over the years on their own patch. The 26 year old midfielder has first hand experience having played for Ayr in successful home ties there against both Inverness Caley Thistle and Hearts.

"We had some good cup games here against Hearts and Inverness" recalled Geggs who went all the way to the League Cup semi final that year only to be knocked out by a Dean Shiels goal in extra time.

Andy scored six goals for Ayr and five of those goals were in front of the home support. He did feel that it was unusual for him to score a goal at Somerset Park that did not come from a header:-

"It is usually headers that I score here. I am delighted to get a goal even though it is against my old team."

Ayr manager Mark Roberts was a team mate when Andy was at Ayr, playing beside him in virtually all his 43 appearances. The two had an interchange during the second half.

"He had a bit of banter when I got the head knock at the side in front of the dugout, he kept on saying to me 'what is up with you, is it your moustache?' I just said that I hate him."
