Calum Woods Post Aberdeen

Calum glad to be back but now sits out two match ban.

Calum Woods v Aberdeen 07/03/09
Sone Aluko and Calum Woods

Calum Woods returned to the Dunfermline starting eleven to face a really trick opponent in the shape of 20 year old Brummy - Sone Aluko. The Pars right back's performance was praised by Jimmy Calderwood:-

"You have to give Calum Woods a lot of credit, the kid did well against him. Sone Aluko is quick, he is tenacious but you can't keep Sone quiet for 90 minutes."

Calum's post match comments echoed his team mates thoughts:-

"All the boys are very pleased with a draw and a replay, we thought it was a really good team performance by us. The boys all stuck in there together even when we went one down, we still felt that we could get something out of the game."

This optimism was supported by the obvious belief that was there on the park:-

"It felt like the team were together and we were putting pressure on them. We thought if we could hang on in there we could get a chance."

Even as they chased an equaliser as many chances came Aberdeen's way with the Pars defence being put under extreme test at times:-

"A couple of times we were but most of the time we dealt well with it. At their goal we were quite open. A few of us had to put in last ditch tackles, Greg Shields and Scott Wilson as well."

The Pars central defenders were a great help to Calum's game he claimed:-

"It is great to have experienced players there, even Austin McCann has experience there so it is good to have three players like that alongside you."

Asked who he fancied in the semi final draw, the reply was not too surprising.

"I am not too fussed to be honest. We can only look forward to our next two league and then the match at Aberdeen."

Dunfermline v Aberdeen

Despite playing youth football in England with Liverpool, Calum had never come across Sone Aluko before. The Birmingham born player was possibly a level or two below him. Calum was pleased to be the starting eleven especially having been introduced the previous Saturday in left midfield.

"I was really pleased when I found out I was on the team sheet and I knew I was starting in my favourite position at right back. Last week the Manager just wanted me to do a job because I was on the bench. I tried to do what I could.

A major disappointment however comes with news from the SFA that Calum is suspended for the next two SFL matches so his next match could well be the Quarter Final Replay at Pittodrie. The replay is currently scheduled for Tuesday 17th March but should Sky television want to screen that match it could slip back 24 hours. In any eventuality it means that the outstanding First Division fixture against St Johnstone will not now be played as hoped on Tuesday 17th March.
