Big stakes for Queens visit

Friday, 16th Apr 2021

Dom Thomas:- “We know what we need to do. We have to create chances and take them.”

For a number of weeks now matches have been described as massive but Pars midfielder Dom Thomas believes Saturday’s noon meeting with Queen of the South is the biggest game of the season. He said:-

“Being so close to Queen of the South in trying to get into the play-offs like them, it is our biggest game of the season. We look forward to big games and we need to go and get that win.

“We beat them at home and we lost at Palmerston but I thought we were the better team that day. Unfortunately we never got the result we wanted - not even a point.

“We feel we maybe owe them one, but we have to take the game to them. They are going for the play-offs and we know they will be hard to beat. They started slowly and now they have picked up, but it is all about what we do now.”

Dunfermline have been unsuccessful in trying to win games since defeating Morton 1-0 at East End Park on 13th March. Of the following seven matches, four matches have been drawn and three lost. Dom commented:-

“There’s never a good time to lose form, but especially now going into the nitty gritty time of the season. There are only three games left but we have two at home and we have to take advantage of that. We know the position we are in, we can’t kid on, we have to just go and win games.”

Asked if he could pinpoint what had been the missing ingredients in recent games Dom joked:-

“If I knew what we were missing I would be taking the team! Seriously, in football you just have to keep working hard and you might get that little break. At the moment we aren’t getting them even though we are working hard.

“We are defensively solid but we maybe need to let go of that a little and be a bit more attacking and free flowing. But if you do that you can’t afford to switch off defensively as a clean sheet always gives you a chance to win the game. We are getting clean sheets but we are not winning games. We know what we need to do. We have to create chances and take them.”

Dom assured that there is still a strong belief in the dressing room that Dunfermline still have a chance:-

“We have two home games and away to Alloa in the last game of the season and we believe we can pick up maximum points from those matches. We have done enough talking, we are at the point where we just have to go and win the games.

“We have put in a shift since the first day of pre-season, through all the Covid stuff and it hasn’t been an easy season. We have got to this point and we don’t want to let it slip after all our hard work and good performances.

“These three games are all that matters and I am sure if we get the maximum points and make the play-offs, then we can forget about the bad form. If we end up in the play-offs you never know what can happen. No one will look back and say we had a bad season if we get promoted it would be a good season.”

Looking at the results earlier this season at home to Queen of the South and Arbroath, and away to Alloa Athletic, on paper it looks can do situation but Dom warned against complacency:-

“We know our jobs, we have three massive games, nine points up for grabs and we need to go and take them. Games aren’t won on paper but with our home form we have - we have only lost two games here all season - so we have to use that to our advantage. Even with the results recently not going for us we are still confident - if we win our games I think we will be in the play-offs.”
