Aaron strikes through purple haze

Sunday, 17th Oct 2021

“When it came off my foot I thought it was eight miles over the bar. I don’t know what happened, it was a bit of a blur

The goal scored by Aaron Comrie that earned Dunfermline a draw against Kilmarnock on Saturday was just his fifth in senior football.

Coming in the fifth minute of time added on at the end of what was a highly competitive match Aaron thought that it was the least that they deserved from the match:-

“It was probably our best performance of the season. We were unfortunate to go 2-1 down, even at 1-0 we created lots of chances and were on the front foot. The goals that we lost just sum up our season so far.”

It was just his fourth goal in 76 Dunfermline appearances but Aaron has never lost a match in which he has scored. The fight back after going behind immediately after getting back on level terms in 73rd minute was justice for a Dunfermline side that dug in while showing much grit and great spirit. The 24 year old defender felt that to comeback and draw confirmed the determination in the squad, he continued:-

“I think that everyone is together, I thought the game showed that. We are all behind each other, we all want to do well, we all want the same thing. We just need that win and performances like that to set us well on our way.

“If you lose a game 2-1 playing like that I think it would have caused a bit of deflation in the camp. That goal will pick us up for the week and give us something to build on.”

The player who was signed from St Johnstone in May 2019 had a difficult finish to clinch the late equaliser from a Josh Edwards cross that Nikolay Todorov just couldn’t reach. Fearing much worse, Aaron admitted he was surprised that his effort hit the net:-

“When it came off my foot I thought it was eight miles over the bar. I don’t know what happened, it was a bit of a blur moment but I was happy to see it go in. I am delighted with it, any goal is a good goal. Josh is claiming the assist but Toddy is trying to fight him for that. I am just happy it went in.”

The draw against a Kilmarnock side unbeaten with no goals against them in their four previous away league matches this season has to be accepted as a good result for Dunfermline. Tommy Wright’s team sit third in the league level on points with Raith Rovers in second and both are now five points behind league leaders Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Aaron was upbeat about the result:-

“I think they are the favourites. They came here and I thought that we held our own and deserved to win the game. We just need to be clinical in taking our chances, we created plenty.

“The second Killie goal was pretty unfortunate, I slipped and then Dowser made an unbelievable tackle that breaks to Shaw. That is just the way things are just now but definitely if we can take our chances we will be fine.”

‘Fine’ but as the first quarter of the season concludes, Dunfermline’s point only takes their total to five, 17 points off the top. Aaron was unsure why that should be but postulated:-

“Maybe at times at home we have not been good enough. On the road we have lost silly goals but everyone is behind each other and we are trying. The team spirit is still there and everyone wants to do well.”
