Manager post Airdrieonians

Listen to this James McPake interview

“I think we started the game okay in terms of the chances we did we create. The real negative of tonight – obviously the result is the important thing – but I think for the decent chances we had in the game, we didn’t work Airdrie’s goalkeeper nearly enough.

“We were snatching at them and I think Matty, normally when he’s in those areas, he’s really good at working goalkeepers. But, again, for him it’s fourth game in 11 or 12 days, so he’ll be feeling that.  That’s the real disappointing thing, is that we never worked the goalkeeper nearly enough.”

What do you say at half-time?

“Just to get the heads up, to keep doing what they were doing. Again, if we’re being really critical of them, and it’s not saying anything we didn’t say at half-time, but we did have to work the goalkeeper more. We had to make him make saves, and the second half was pretty much the same. I don’t know if there was many other chances, but Airdrie score their two real chances, although McGill’s goal’s not a massive chance, it’s a really good bit of play from him, a great strike that beats Den. The first goal, we don’t do our jobs. We know Nikolay well enough; any ball into the box, he’s going to be there or thereabouts on the end of it, and that’s an easy one for him. Josh just loses him a little.

“I thought we were decent enough but you’ve got to be clinical, and clinical doesn’t mean scoring every chance you get, but you’ve got to be working goalkeepers, making them make saves, not making it easy for them, and that’s all we asked of them in the second half – to go and do a bit more of that. Unfortunately it wasn’t our night.”

Raith Rovers up next

“It’s another one in quick succession where the squad’s going to be needed.  Tonight, it was great getting Kane some minutes, Matty his first 90 minutes – and he looked like he could keep going, so he’ll recover now.  We’ll get Chris Kane back as well and Benedictus was close to playing tonight but I just felt the two centre backs had done great in the last two games and to be fair to those two I thought they were decent again. They didn’t have too much in terms of last-ditch stuff to do.

“In terms of the second goal, I don’t think anyone could have done anything about that.  We’ll pick them back up, we’ll recover on Wednesday and then we’ll be ready for Saturday.”

What was the issue with Chris Kane?

“It was just real fatigue, I think. He was ill last week and he only trained on the Friday and then put in a great shift on a heavy pitch on Saturday.  He’s not played a lot of minutes over the last however long, so we’re very cautious with him in the hope that allows him to get a run now.”

You must be delighted to get Kane Ritchie-Hosler back?

“I think it shows you the work he’s done.  He’s been frustrated. He had to wait until a certain date to get the scan done again. I’m delighted to have him back.  We’ll need to be patient with him until he gets up to his standards but I’m delighted to have him back. He’s a great kid and he’s got a lot to offer.”
