Kyle returns and wants to play a leading role

Dunfermline’s long wait for a victory over local rivals Raith Rovers continued on Saturday as they suffered a 2-0 defeat at Stark’s Park. Despite feeling they competed well, captain Kyle Benedictus was left frustrated by familiar failings.

“It was the same old,” bemoaned Kyle. “I thought we did well in the game but there were big moments. Their keeper pulled off a ‘worldy’ that would have made it 1-1. Their second goal we switched off at a quick free kick. That shouldn’t have happened.”

Dunfermline had 13 shots as opposed to Raith’s 10 but the home side had more on target and of course two counted. Kyle agreed that Dunfermline’s lack of a clinical edge was a key factor. “That has probably been affecting us in recent weeks. There was a lot of effort but there wasn’t much in the game. They’ve had their moments and that’s what got them the three points.”

Despite dominating possession, Dunfermline were again unable to make it count on the scoreboard, much to the skipper’s frustration. “It’s probably happened in every league game against Raith. We need to be more clinical, they’ve managed to take their moments and we haven’t.”  The defeat was made more galling for the captain as it came against his former club, though he insists that wasn’t a motivating factor. “Defeat hurts. I don’t let that affect me, I just get on with my football.”

The positive on Saturday was Kyle’s return from a lengthy injury lay-off, the most recent his thigh. This was his first full 90 minutes since August. “It’s been 60 minutes in the last seven months so personally it’s good to be back, but it’s not the result we wanted for the fans who backed us again.”

Now back in the team the 32 year old central defender is determined to use his leadership role to rally the squad for the final eight league games. First up is Friday night’s match at home against league leaders Dundee United but Kyle added:-

“We need to win as many as possible. We’ll be back in, get the place bubbly again and train hard. United are challenging for the league so we need to be ready and go for the three points.”
