Dunfermline travelled south on a blustery day to face Queen of the South at Palmerston Park. The ninth placed Fifers had the opportunity to put some space between themselves and their bottom of the league hosts.

John Hughes had signed Joe Chalmers from Ayr United and Bobby Kamwa on loan from Leeds United but it was just Chalmers who started as the manager also brought in skipper Graham Dorrans with Paul Allan and Matthew Todd dropping to the bench. A happy sight was that of Dom Thomas back on the Pars bench after his knee operation in December.

For Queen of the South, Allan Johnston was able to bring in two new faces - Darragh O’Connor and Sam Folarin - with Ally Roy also starting meaning Ben Liddle, Calvin McGrory and Ruari Paton dropped to the bench.

The sides changed ends before Lee Connelly kicked off for Queen of the South attacking the goal in front of their standing supporters. First shot of any description came in sixth minute when Lewis McCann was able to burst in on the right side of the Queens box but his low shot veered out wide left.

Queens threatened from a Connelly free kick three minutes later but the defence got that away despite Shea Gordon trying to return the ball into the Pars box. The home side conceded a corner on the left to a Josh Edwards cross. Steven Lawless took it short to Chalmers who laced it back to him and McCann came close with a neat flick.

Next corner again from the left was taken by Dorrans and although Lewis Martin headed home he was penalised for climbing. Queens won a corner of their own in 15th minute that McCann got away and then Folarin forced another off Edwards but referee Greg Aitken blew up Roberto Nditi for his challenge.

A corner was conceded off Euan East and Lawless saw his cross defended even though Coll Donaldson got in a shot that was blocked. A quickly taken thrown in by Lawless however was gathered on the right byeline by Dow and his cross was netted by DORRANS. The skipper’s first goal for the club gave the visitors a 20th minute lead. 0-1

Dorrans almost made it two just three minutes later sending an effort from 25 yards out narrowly wide left. The travelling support who had met various obstacles on their journey south were really enjoying this and they had more to celebrate from a 28th minute Dorrans corner from the left. The home defence failed to clear and the ball sat up sweetly for former Queens player Dan PYBUS to notch his first ever Pars goal with a drive past keeper Josh Rae. 0-2

Dunfermline with their tails up looked fearless and the home side and the home fans grew more and more frustrated. A Willie Gibson free kick was glanced well wide right and it was back to playing the game deep into the Dumfries side’s half. Dow had a great 37th minute chance cleared off the line and then next minute another chance from close in that was blocked.

The Pars corner tally increased to six before the half ended. The visitors with the bulk of the possession had also registered six shots in the first 45 in comparison to Queens one.

Now allowed five substitutes in a game Allan Johnston made three changes before the restart with Josh Todd, Ruari Paton and Ben Liddle replacing Roberto Nditi, Sam Folarin and Ally Roy. Within the first three minutes however Paton and Liddle both sustained injuries but were able to continue.

Dorrans forced a 53rd minute corner on the left but played the ball through the Queens box without a touch of any kind. There was a promising move just a minute later with a clever touch from McCann setting up Lawless to pick out Comrie on the right but the final ball disappointed and the defence cleared.

McCann did well to win the ball wide right but his cut back for Dow was unfortunately cut out. There was a bit more fight about the Doonhamers in this half but they were kept well away from Owain Fon Williams goal so much so that Gibson’s effort from distance on the hour was sent high over the crossbar.

In 53 minutes Gibson set up Max Johnston for a dangerous diagonal into the Pars box that Donaldson edged behind for what became an ineffective corner. Next McCann won a corner but unfortunately that proved no better than Queens. Despite the four centre of the box attackers setting off in different directions the ball was cut out before it got anywhere near them.

It was the 70th minute before Dunfermline managed another shot and it was a good opportunity with a Dorrans break from deep inside his own half sending Lawless away down the right channel. Showing no selfishness he laid the ball off to McCann to his left but the striker’s effort went wide right.

Dorrans dispatched a 28 yard free kick high over the crossbar before at the other end a Paton effort was deflected for a corner on the left. East and Donaldson clashed in the attempt on the cross and physios were required.

Nine minutes from the end Comrie made a strong surging run after latching on to a Lawless pass. His cut back was perfect for Dorrans in front of goal but keeper Rae made a fine save to deny him. That was the captain’s last involvement as he was taken off to allow Bobby Kamwa to come on for his Dunfermline debut.

The Cameroon sub produced a neat touch to create a chance from the right byeline and McCann was unlucky with his attempt, sending the ball wide right. Queens won a 90th minute corner, there were three blocks on Liddle’s delivery and follow ups before East blasted the ball over the bar.

Dunfermline saw the match out and the fans singing and dancing at the end was in stark contrast to the scenes at the end of the match after the 1-0 defeat. The Pars move up to seventh place, equal on points and goal difference with Ayr United who they play at Somerset Park next.

When interviewed Manager John Hughes and all his players tend to term their next matches as massive but they don’t come much more massive than this Saturday’s match in Dumfries. Dunfermline in ninth place take on a Queen of the South side that currently sits just one point below the Pars in the Championship. Pars boss Peter Grant said of this match “it was very difficult to watch a team representing me today, never mind the club playing the way we did in the first half especially.”

It had looked as though it might be a goalless encounter but Queen of the South would win the match with a goal just five minutes from the end.

The home side had pushed up forcing a corner on the left as they pinned the Pars back. Todorov blocked a Fitzpatrick shot but the ball was not cleared and Roberto Nditi fired a block that landed back for Lee CONNELLY to crash the ball at an angle from the left into the far side of the Fifers net.
