cinch Championship: Reece Cole started in place of Craig Wighton. Ross Docherty (7) 0-1: Kevin Holt (22) 0-2: Ross Graham og 78) 0-3:

Partick Thistle were the visitors for the Pars first home match of the 2021-2022 league season. Peter Grant made one change to his starting eleven in the drawn match against Morton. Reece Cole started against his old club and Craig Wighton was on the bench which also included the welcome sight of Ryan Dow.

The visitors’ manager Ian McCall made two changes to the side that defeated Queen of the South on the opening day of the league campaign. Harry Stone replaced Jamie Sneddon between the posts and Scott Tiffoney was preferred to former Par Steven Bell who found himself on the bench. Two Pars from last season - Lewis Mayo and Kyle Turner - were in the Thistle starting eleven.

There were 2000 home fans allowed for this match and with more covid restrictions due to be lifted in two days time this was a new beginning for football at East End Park especially so with the club and the fans welcoming their new German owners to their first match since taking over.

Thistle emerged from the East Stand was the Pars ran out from the undercroft and it was Kevin O’Hara got the game underway with the home side attacking the goal at the away end.

Encouraging by very vocal home fans from the kick off Dunfermline quickly took hold of the game. Cole was able to play a couple of probing passes and both wingbacks, Kyle Macdonald and Josh Edwards threatened with early crosses.

Thistle forced Ross Graham into conceding a seventh minute corner from a Turner cross. The former Par delivered from the right and captain Ross DOCHERTY rose at the near post to glance home his header. 0-1

The home fans were concerned quickly after as Zak Rudden looked like cashing on in some indecision from the central defenders and Deniz Mehmet was at full stretch to hold the loose ball. Richard Foster earned a corner on the left that Mehmet punched away but another followed from the other side and Kevin Holt got his head to Turner’s cross but his effort thankfully cleared the bar.

A Dunfermline free kick midway inside the Thistle half eased the pressure but the Pars attempts to get forward and create danger were coming to little. With Turner standing over the ball to take a free kick midway inside the Fifers half on the left side, Stuart Bannigan took a quick one to Tiffoney wide left and he earned the 22nd minute corner that would produce Thistle’s second goal. Turner sent the ball in and HOLT rose at the far post to head the ball into the Pars net. 0-2

A Graham header from a Thomas free kick went straight into the hands of Stone and Thomas had an effort from 30 yards that cleared the bar. Mehmet was generating worried sounds from the home crowd and escaped a penalty decision against him when spilling a cross and then clearing while clipping Rudden.

Partick continued to take the game to Dunfermline and a Tiffoney cross earned a 43rd minute corner that travelled through the box for Bannigan to return and Graham came close to being on it as the ball flashed across goal and wide right.

The home side won their first corner of the game as the half time whistle beckoned and it was the first of two with Graham heading wide right at the far post.

Half time: Dunfermline 0 Partick Thistle 2

Craig Wighton was brought on for the second half with Dom Thomas going off. The Pars sub was soon involved sending the ball out wide for Macdonald to flash across the six yard and Wighton just failing to get the 55 second touch that would have brought about a goal.

Three minutes later Dorrans got deep inside the Partick box to cut back from the right for O’Hara and although he got two bites at the cherry the defence kept him out. Then in 54 minutes Ciaran McKenna forced Graham to concede a corner and this one Dunfermline ably defended even though Bannigan got the opportunity to ping the ball back into the left side of the penalty box.

Play was swiftly back at the other end with Macdonald racing up the wing to crash in another useful ball. It was Wighton again who got the shot in but it was deflected wide right and from Cole’s 56th minute corner Graham just could not get enough purchase on his header.

The home side had certainly rallied since the interval and Edwards crossed in another ball from the left that Stone had to gather. Macdonald drilled a 20 yard shot that Stone dropped on one knee to hold at his near post in 64 minutes.

Two minutes later a miscued clearance afforded Todorov a header from close in that Stone did well to tip over his bar. Cole delivered from the left but Thistle headed that and a returned ball clear.

There was more hope when Mayo fouled Wighton to hand the Pars a free kick on the left but Todorov was offside as Cole tried to find him at the far post. A Graham pass back to his keeper ran passed the left post as the keeper scrambled back. Fortunately Macdonald headed clear from the 76th minute corner.

Further disaster followed two minutes later when Partick sub Cammy Smith crossed from the left and Ross Graham turned the ball into his own net. 0-3

Ryan Dow and Dan Pybus were 82nd minute subs for Aaron Comrie and Reece Cole. The sun came out as Thistle earned another corner but it continued a gloomy day for Peter Grant’s side. The 88th minute chance from an Edwards cross was headed on target by Todorov only from Stone to scramble it away.

Partick would leave East End Park as league leaders while the home side sat ninth. Dunfermline leaked goals too softly and credit to Thistle they played the game really well and thoroughly deserved their victory conceded Peter Grant.

The outcome of this match was more or less determined after four minutes. Kiltie dispossessed Tam O’Ware out on the right side and as he was about to put the trigger on his shot eight yards out, O’Ware took him down. Referee Mike Roncone pointed to the spot and then produced a red card for the Thistle captain. Kevin NISBET stepped up and sent the ball to Jamie Sneddon’s left. 1-0

MARTIN slotted past Sneddon at his near post and Lewis’ first goal since January 2015 made it 2-0 just six minutes later.

Nisbet was deemed to have been taken down by Reece Cole as he tried to control the ball and the referee was pointing to the spot again. NISBET stepped up again and this time buried the ball on the bottom left. 3-0

When Kakay headed the ball out from a corner it dropped for NISBET on the right side of the box and he drilled the ball into the far side of the net. 4-0

Nisbet the first half’s hat trick hero scored the Fifers fifth. It was just the fourth minute of the second half when Dow’s cross from near the right corner flag was cleverly turned back by Beadling for NISBET to convert from six yards. 5-0

With fifteen minutes remaining Devine held Miller and COLE struck the resulting 35 yard free kick sweetly into the bottom left of the home net. 5-1

This Season

Thistle have won three and lost two of their matches this season. In their first Championship match last Saturday at home to Queen of the South they came back from conceding a Willie Gibson goal to lead 2-1 but in 74 minutes their opponents equalised and it took a Scott Tiffoney goal five minutes from time to take all three points.

Dunfermline’s league season got off to a start with a 2-2 draw at Morton and after coming from behind to lead 2-1 lost a freak goal nine minutes from time. This season they have won three, drawn one and lost 1-0 away to Premiership opposition.
