SPFL Under 20s League

HAMILTON 2 DUNFERMLINE 0

John Potter`s U20s travelled to New Douglas Park on Tuesday to meet Hamilton Accies in the SPFL U20s league. It was not to be a fruitful trip however as Potts boys lost their third match in a row.

Luke Johnston started in central midfield, Craig Dargo was alone up front with Lewis Spence tucked in just behind him. In just the third minute Spence played through Ryan Williamson but he was dispossessed, then at the other end just a minute later a dangerous Hamilton cross was not convincingly cleared by the defence buit they survived.

Lewis Martin cleared an eighth minute cross from Craig Johnstone and next Jason McGrath looked as though he was through on the keeper but the offside flag was already raised. Ryan Goodfellow flapped a bit when a low ball came in from a corner, the break of the ball allowed an opponent to shoot but Ross Drummond headed off the line. The follow up shot was then palmed away to his right by Goodfellow.

On 29 minutes Dargo on the left released Ryan Ferguson but the ball was taken off his feet before he could shoot.  The Pars first corner of the game came three minutes later. Ferguson took it short to McMillan but his cross was too long.

Drummond next won the ball on the left and picked out Gavin McMillan but when he pulled the ball back for Ryan Ferguson his shot was blocked.  Dargo followed up but keeper Blair Currie made a good save.

From just about taking the lead the Fifers then found themselves behind. Hamilton went back uip the park and scored. Jason McGRATH found the net from a Jesus Garcia Tena cross from the left.  Hamilton had been the better side in the first half and at the break were one ahead.

Half time: Hamilton Accies 1 Dunfermline 0

The second half yielded Dunfermline very little. Best effort was in 62 minutes when a Spence free kick went left for Drummond to cross but Ferguson was wide left with his header.

Hamilton too had free kicks, probably more than Dunfermline but it was not until eight minutes from time that Greg DOCHERTYsealed the win for Accies with a curler from outside the box on the left. Not one of Dunfermline`s better performances.

John Potter`s thoughts on the game:

"We struggled to get going. They were quite direct and had a big player up front and we struggled to cope. They got in behind us, played it long and played it into our third and we were trying to play wee passes and to be fair to them they pressed us quite well.

"It was a test, we said to them in there tonight that we have never really played a team like that this season. It was a test for the defenders tonight to play againstthose type of players and they will learn from that.

"We never really threatened their goal and just didn`t get started tonight, so I am disappointed. I thought Lewis (Martin) and Dec played quite well against Tena but it was a different type of test for them tonight. I just don`t think we performed all over the pitch and never competed well enough.

"We tried to change the formation in the second half, Craig (Dargo) was up front himself in the first half but we wanted to try and turn them and we put Ryan Ferguson up front beside him, but it never really worked. Our passes were too short and it was difficult as they pressed us really well. We should have tried to get them turned and get in behind and let us play in their third but it didn`t really work."
