Scottish Championship: Steven Whittaker and Craig Wighton start

After these teams had played matches with six and then five goals in them earlier in the season, this one was to be goalless. A result that suited the Taysiders much more than it did Dunfermline.

Dunfermline made two changes in their starting eleven at Ayr. Steven Whittaker and Craig Wighton replaced Lewis Mayo and Fraser Murray in the Dunfermline team while James McPake’s Dundee were without Max Anderson and Paul McGowan through injury while Christie Elliott was on the bench as into their side came Cammy Kerr, Jordan McGhee and former Par Shaun Byrne.

Four league matches remaining for each side and it was definitely the business end of the season. Both sides were looking for results to bolster their play off chances with Dunfermline not much leeway to give to keep their challenge real.

The teams changed ends before the one minute silence in memory of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. It was Ewan Henderson who kicked off with the home side attacking the McCathie Stand end but it was Dundee who threatened first with McGhee powering a shot wide right within 45 seconds.

Dundee had defended an early Dunfermline corner before a break down the right by Declan McManus in fifth minute put his side on a promising position but his cross was blocked only to rebound to Wighton who crashed his shot wide right.

It had been a very sunny day in West Fife but the rain that began to pelt down was much more that an April shower. Dundee pushed up through Declan McDaid on the left but it was Paul McMullan’s run and cross also from the left that created danger. Danny Mullen collected on the right and Lee Ashcroft met it but his header was well off target.

A cracking cross field pass from Wighton sent Thomas in on goal but his shot was deflected right for a corner that he took. The Dundee defence dealt with the 13th minute setpiece after headers from Henderson and Euan Murray. Two minutes later Thomas played the ball into the left side of the Dundee box just where O’Hara had been calling for it but keeper Adam Legzdins held the shot.

Christie Elliott had to replace the injured Jordan Marshall with just 19 minutes gone and two minutes later a Jason Cummings cross was met by Mullen only eight years out but his header went wide right. Two more minutes passed before Owain Fôn Williams was called upon to hold a well connected shot from Mullen.

Next a Wighton - Comrie move up the right created danger but the defence forced Aaron out and there was to be no corner. On 30 minutes Henderson tested Legzdins but the 34 year old keeper held the shot from the edge of the box.

In 41 minutes a Liam Fontaine throw in deep down the right was flicked on to McGhee who clipped a shot that went outside the left goalpost. The half had been competitive and ended all square.

Half time: Dunfermline 0 Dundee 0

After a strong start to the second half Dunfermline got pegged back a bit and Fon Williams had to come for a McMullan cross and Euan Murray cleared. In 55 minutes Thomas made Legzdins dive to save his shot from 20 yards out.

The match got bogged down in a middle of the park for a lengthy period interrupted by two Mullen efforts with only one requiring Fon Williams intervention. The visitors won their first corner in 65th minute but the ref blew up for pushing before anything came of it.

Lewis Mayo replaced Steven Whittaker as Dunfermline tried something different but it was Dundee who continued to make the chances, a McMullan chip allowing Mullen a header that landed on the roof of the net.

Another Dundee corner in 71st minute picked out Ashcroft but he could not get enough ton his header. Concerningly play was taking place in the Fifers half with Vytas Gašpuitis and then even Craig Wighton back for headed clearances.

McDaid blasted a chance wildly over the bar. In 75 minutes McDaid fed Kerr on the left and his cross was deflected on the roof of the net. Osman Sow replaced Jason Cummings before the corner and the substitute got his head on the cross but sent the ball high.

Fraser Murray was the next Pars sub taking the place of Kevin O’Hara with Wighton switched upfront. It continued to be the Dee who created the chances but the defence held despite the pressure.

Five minutes from the end a Fraser Murray break fed Thomas on the right side of the Dundee box and Henderson got in a shot that Fontaine blocked for a corner on the left. The third Dunfermline sub, Lewis McCann, came on for Craig Wighton before Thomas crossed but despite various attempts to direct the ball on target the away defence held.

The match was not to produce a goal and the draw kept Dunfermline fifth, five points behind their opponents who stay third. Inverness are in fourth place one point better off with every club with three matches remaining.

Scottish Championship: (home) v Dundee Tuesday 13th April 2021, kick off 6.00pm at East End Park behind closed doors but live on the BBC Scotland channel

This match was postponed exactly two months ago and with just four matches of the Championship season remaining the sides meet separated by five points. Dundee occupy third place and Dunfermline outside the play off places in fifth, so anything other than a home win will make it much harder for the Fifers to reach the play offs.

The home side won the last time these two met at East End but that was in January last year. Dundee have failed to win in their last eight visits but they will out to take the three points and move away from the Pars.

At Dens Park | P62 W14 D18 L30 GF79 GA128

The league record is pretty similar with Dunfermline winning 27 of the 55 league matches at East End Park. The Pars will hope to make it ten Dundee visits since they last won in Dunfermline.

The Pars went ahead in 28th minute when Danny Devine embarked on a run into the Dundee half. He played in Euan Murray to his left who slipped the ball on for Dom Thomas. The on loan Kilmarnock player did really well to fend off the challenge of Cammy Kerr and his cross was met six yards out with a diving header from Ryan DOW. 1-0

Five minutes before half time Kevin NISBET dispossessed young Cameron just inside the Dundee half, raced away and having cut inside from the left, smashed the ball into the far side of the net from the edge of the box. 2-0
