Fisher fired up for Rovers return

Sam Fisher has played every minute of the four matches against Raith Rovers this season – two in the league, one in the Viaplay Cup and once in the Scottish Cup and the 2 year old defender is hoping that this fifth encounter can have a better outcome for the team and its loyal supporters.

After missing the previous match due to concussion, Sam Fisher returned refreshed against Ayr and is now raring to go against league leaders Raith Rovers on Tuesday. Despite a good week’s training over Christmas, Sam followed concussion protocols before being cleared to play on Saturday.

“Obviously I missed last week because I was sick they had to do what was necessary, I went to the hospital and got checked over. It was concussion and so I had a week off which helped me out. I had a good week’s training, I feel fit, I did some running on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day. I was really ticking over and I’ve not lost any fitness. I’m feeling good, I’m happy to get through the 90 minutes and I am looking forward to Tuesday now.”

Sam returned to the centre of defence taking over from the injured Chris Hamilton but at Ayr injuries to Rhys Breen and substitute Kyle Benedictus now make the options in the back three rather limited. Ewan Otoo was also missing but Sam is confident he will be back alongside him for the New Year derby against the Rovers:-

“We are hoping that the injuries aren’t too bad and we will be able to tidy them up by Tuesday.  Chris Hamilton is looking good. He was at the match on Saturday, he is walking about fine and running about. We need to get that mask ready for him and hopefully he can be right back in.

“Ewan Otoo’s is just a wee niggly one. We missed him on Saturday, he is a very good player and yeah he will be fine for Tuesday. We will take care of them and hopefully be good for numbers.

“We know Raith well, they know us well. It will be a good game, they have all been good games this season. I’m sure the fans will be out in their numbers yet again. They have been brilliant for us all season long and even today they went all the way down to Somerset Park which is not an easy journey. Credit to them for going down and we thank them again.”

Dunfermline have drawn one and lost three of the 2023 encounters and Sam is hoping to start the new year off in winning form, although he maintains:-

“It is just another game. We are going into it for the win that’s all, we are not looking to get anything back on them. It’s just another game and a game that we are looking forward to.”

This will be the first New Year derby at KDM Group East End Park since 2013 when Andy Geggan’s 71st minute goal won the day. Sam recalls how passionate a derby it is when Raith come to the city:-

“I have played in a few of them now and I know what to expect from the Dunfermline fans and the Raith fans. There is a lot of pressure on you but it is something that I look forward to and something that I thrive on.  We know the feeling that we had after the last few games against them and we do not want to experience that again. Even if Raith weren’t at the top, it’s a derby nevertheless. All the boys will be right up for it, we will be going out there for the win.”

Sam and the squad were in every day up to the derby and will be in every day until Friday when they travel to Hampden Park for the televised match against Queen’s Park.

“We have a lot of games coming up and we have not a lot of bodies. I’m sure the management team will take care of us, they have done that all season. It is just that bit of luck we are looking for, it is not that we are over training. The training has been very good, it’s just that wee bit of luck as I say.”

With contact training now reduced and focus turning to analysis of Raith and next opponents Queen’s Park, Sam seems in determined mood ahead of this latest derby showdown.
