Chris Kane Signs for Dunfermline

Dunfermline Athletic is pleased to announce that Chris Kane has signed a two year contract.  This follows a loan spell last season during which the St Johnstone striker made ten starts and scored five goals. Chris says that he is delighted to be back at the club.

“The manager said even before we broke up that he wanted to make it happen. That helped me” claimed Chris. “Being at a club where the manager wants you is obviously the first thing that you want, so I’m just really excited to get started.”

Arriving on 13th February the 29 year old provided a welcome boost to a squad that was hit by mounting injuries. He went straight into the starting eleven four days later in the home match against Arbroath, he looks back on his games with Dunfermline as a great success and a major factor in his desire to return:-

“It was a good loan spell for me, I really enjoyed it. I did well, kept myself fit and scored goals. That is what I wanted to do, so I had a successful loan spell but knowing the boys, how the team plays and how the manager works all benefited me. Once the ball got rolling I knew that it was something that I wanted to do and thankfully we have done it pretty quickly.”

There were other options open to Chris but they were never really explored once Dunfermline’s offer was submitted.

“As soon as they did that I was only going one way unless a team in Saudi were going to offer me crazy money.  It was something that just happened and we just focused on that.  To be honest there weren’t many discussions, I spoke to the manager the other day, Craig Levein phoned me and I knew what it was going to be about. Obviously St Johnstone stayed up and I’m happy and delighted for them that they stayed up but they have four strikers signed for next year. If they did want to keep me I probably wasn’t going to play. It wasn’t something that I really thought was going to happen. I was just really waiting on the phone call and it did happen after that I knew that I was going to come to Dunfermline.”

Chris only lost once in his ten appearances for Dunfermline and the way the season ended for him personally and the team generates optimism for next season. He continued “it is going to be a really competitive league. Dundee United are going up – they are a massive club – but I feel that every team in the league now are pretty similar. We know that we are a really good team and if we start well, keep everyone fit and away from injuries because they can hurt your season.  If the whole team stays fit and we start well then I’m sure that we can have a successful season.

“It will be really competitive. If we compete the whole season hopefully we will be up there but at the same time you have Hamilton and Falkirk coming up. Any team can beat any team if you are off it, so every game we will need to be on it. Hopefully we are and hopefully we can push up as high as we can.”

The move re-unites Chris Kane and Dave Mackay. They played together at Saints and Chris praised his former team mate, “he was brilliant, a great captain and he lifted the trophy back in 2014. He was a massive player for Saints. He has not really changed much, he is still pretty much the same. He talks well, he knows the game really well and talks you through it. He talks to every single person a bit differently. He is really good and really helpful.”

With Dave Mackay as his coach both are hoping that Chris can enjoy good times at KDM Group East End Park. Chris left school at fifteen to join St Johnstone, nearly thirty now, the Perth club is virtually all that he has known. He won the two cups as a Saints player and experienced games in European competition. I have loads of amazing memories that I will never forget.

“I think it probably was the right time to leave Saints. I’m not sad that I’m leaving, it will just be a bit strange but I’m delighted to be here and I’m really looking forward to it. It is going to be the next chapter for me and my family.”
