Dunfermline Athletic

Ton up for Pars

Monday, 11th Apr 2016

Michael Moffat's second goal on Saturday was the club's one hundredth in official competition this season

It's the first time this the 100 has been achieved since Bert Paton's team scored 104 goals in season 1993/94, and it is the fifteenth time that the club has scored more than one hundred goals in official competitions in one season. The haul has come as follows:- League - 81, League Cup - 9, Scottish Cup - 3, Petrofac Cup - 7.

The number of games played, the structure of competitions, and even the rules of football have varied greatly over the years and have affected the chances of high scoring. For example, most of the high scoring seasons occurred when the League Cup competition was played in sections so teams were guaranteed six matches in it.

The 1960s are also well-represented since Dunfermline enjoyed success (and sometimes high scores) in Europe. The third best season of all, 1964-1965, had Dunfermline involved in five different competitions (League, League Cup, Scottish Cup, Inter Cities Fairs Cup and the Summer Cup) meaning the team played 63 official matches that season!

On the other hand, pre-war seasons are hardly represented because, apart from the League and Scottish Cup, all other competitions were regional ones, so are not included.

Most of the seasons when the ton mark was reached happened when Dunfermline either won or were chasing promotion. There was one exception in 1958/59 when Dunfermline were all but relegated until a 10-1 win over Partick Thistle on the final day ensured survival.

The highest number of goals came in season 1957/58 when Dunfermline won promotion (but not the title) with 120 league goals, easily the best in the club's history. A further 14 League Cup and 7 Scottish Cup goals gave the team 141 goals for the season.
