Five-a-side football opportunities are growing in Dunfermline following the refurbishment of four five-a-side football pitches at the Pitreavie Playing Fields by Scottish charity, The Pars Trust.

70% of Dunfermline Athletic Football Club's playing fields at Pitreavie, are sub-leased by DAFC to The Pars Trust, who operate the 12 grass and 5 synthetic pitches for public use, are used by more than 2,300 footballers, runners, and other community users every week. However, the five a side pitches had fallen into such a state of disrepair that the pitches were underutilised and losing income.

Having secured a funding package of £60,000 from Social Investment Scotland, the Pars Trust has been able to replace the old playing surfaces with new state of the art 3G synthetic surfaces. The overhaul has enabled the Trust to more than double the number of users, now with a capacity for at least 1,300 children, youth and adult five-a-side players every week.

The Pars Trust was set up in 1995 by Directors of Dunfermline Athletic Football Club to provide sport and recreation facilities to local communities in West Fife, and to drive forward the Club's Community Programme. The playing fields have been a central part of this programme since 2006, providing a key community resource for local residents of all ages, from which all operating profit is continually re-invested for the benefit of that community. The Trust is now working hard to ensure refurbishment of other elements of the centre, working with Fife Council and sportscotland to raise funds and install a new full size synthetic pitch later this year.

Karen Masterton, Executive Director of DAFC and The Pars Trust, said:-

"The Pitreavie Playing Fields are such an important resource for the Trust and for the local community. However, the poor state of the 5 a-side pitches was preventing teams from using them, resulting in lost income for the Trust and restricted football resources for the local community. Thankfully, Social Investment Scotland completely understood the potential impact of modernising these facilities for the local community and provided us with help towards the total costs involved in the uplift and removal, purchase and installation of the new surfaces. The resurfaced playing fields now offer local teams of all ages first class facilities that are on a par with any facilities in Scotland."

Chief Executive of Social Investment Scotland, Alastair Davis, added:-

"Our aim is to help support the growth of Scottish communities and the Pars Trust plays a key role in helping to deliver this goal. We're confident that the refurbishment of their five-a side playing surfaces will encourage more residents to use the facilities which it turn will create stronger and healthier communities within West Fife."
