Dunfermline Athletic

Super Saturday for Joe Cardle

Monday, 29th Feb 2016

"There is a lot of pressure on us to win it, we know that every Saturday but we are enjoying it.

Joe Cardle claimed to be "over the moon" about his hattrick against Stranraer on Saturday. After scoring three goals to take his haul for the season to 14, he told the media:-

"Obviously three points comes first but to get a hattrick is another special occasion for me. I am delighted with today's performance. There were other chances that we could have put away, the same as last week when we could have scored five or six. We only got the two at Brechin but it's three points that are crucial at the end of the day. We got that again on Saturday and we are happy."

Dunfermline's sixth goal against Stranraer was Joe's third but he had given up the opportunity to hit in his third while trying to set up the 17 year old debut boy, PJ Crossan:-

"I know what it is like coming on for your debut, you are full of nerves. It was about five minutes after he came on I could have shot but I thought lay it on for the youngster but unfortunately he never got his shot away.

"I made up for it in the end and got my hattrick so I am delighted about that but it would have been a special occasion for PJ to come on and score a goal. Unfortunately it never happened but there will be plenty more for the rest of his career.

"The boys throughout the whole season have been fantastic, it is a really tight knit group and the boys all get on both on and off the pitch. I think you can see that even at 3-1 up we wanted to go on and get more goals. We knew that there were more to get today and obviously I am happy with my goals and with Faiss getting another two.

"We have just got to take it game by game and hopefully if we can keep doing what we did on Saturday we still have a chance of winning this league. There is a lot of pressure on us to win it, we know that every Saturday but we are enjoying it. We are going out on Saturdays and enjoying playing with one another.

"You can see that the boys are all buzzing to be in that starting eleven on a Saturday afternoon. They are playing fantastic and the quality has been there all season we just need to keep it going now for the last ten games."

East End Park's attendance was over 3000 again and Joe praised their contribution throughout the whole season.

"They have been unbelievable. They are going to root us on and hopefully we can get the numbers up and get the club back to where they should be."

Joe has the match ball from the 4-0 match at Forfar in September that he earned for his first hattrick:-

"I have one in the house and I am going to try and get another couple before the end of the season. I have another to take home but I am just happy to be getting goals. I think Faiss is a bit distraught because he never got his hattrick.
"A hattrick is a special occasion, I am happy that my daughter Josie and my fiancée Lucy were here to see it, so it was a good day all round."

Joe got off the mark when he scored Dunfermline's second just three minutes from half time. He described it:-

"it was one of those ones where I cut inside, like I normally do and connected perfectly. I turned round as soon as I hit it, I didn't know where it was going but the crowd reacted and I knew that it was in the back of the net.

"I would take another one of them before the end of the season, but I think I was due one because there have been a lot of shots gone off recently that have not been hitting the target. I was definitely due one. It was a great goal and I am happy with the other two as well."
