Reserve League Cup v Cowdenbeath

Tuesday, 13th Nov 2007

Maxwell nets but not enough to beat the local rivals.

DUNFERMLINE 1 COWDENBEATH 2

Dunfermline`s injury crisis meant that they went into this Reserve match with only five of their first team pool.  Jim Hamilton, Scott Morrison, Jamie Harris, Iain Williamson and Nick Phinn were joined by six of the Under 19s who were dumped out of the SFA Youth Cup on Sunday.

The sides started gingerly, both wary of each other. Chances started to come with a Paul Willis cross met by Jim Hamilton but his header went straight to the Cowdenbeath keeper, Kyle Allison.

Hammy turned provider in 22nd minute setting up Gary MacLachlan for a low drive from the edge of the box that also went straight to the man in red. Cowdenbeath created danger from through balls with Callum Young requiring Greg Paterson to be quick off his line to thwart the danger.

Scott Morrison had a crack at goal but was narrowly wide before the visitors took the lead after Jamie Harris was penalised for a tug deep down the left. Dunfermline might have defended the 29th minute free kick better Jon ROBERTSON didn`t delay in taking the chance sending the ball low through a ruck of players to score at Paterson`s left hand post.

Two minutes later a fine pass from Morrison sent Iain Williamson in on the left side of the opposition`s box. The striker chipped the keeper but the shot lacked power and ex Par Pat Scullion gathered the ball on the line.

Before the break Chris Anton sped away from Stuart Dearden but Jamie Harris came across to sweep away the danger.

Half time: Dunfermline 0 Cowdenbeath 1

The Blue Brazil started well in the second half with Scullion driving up the left to win a corner. Williamson defended that well when the corner was delivered but in the ninth minute of the new half Paterson came sliding out confident that he was going to take the ball away from the feet of Scott Dalziel. The referee pointed to the spot and yellow carded the keeper who was unfortunate that his timing was just out.

DALZIEL took the penalty finding the right side of the net with the keeper sent in the opposite direction. The Pars replied with Hamilton meeting another Willis cross but the visitor`s keeper did well to hold cleanly at his near post.

It was game on however when Dunfermline got a goal back in 63rd minute. Hamilton headed a cross from the straight back across the box and Kris MAXWELL running in turned the ball past Allison.

Maxwell nets v Cowdenbeath

Cowden went on the attack and sub Harry McGregor did well to intercept a promising ball from the left. Robertson collected the clearance and forced another save out of Paterson. As the match entered the final quarter Hamilton was fouled as he turned 30 yards out and Morrison beat the wall from the free kick only to see Hamilton hook the ball into the McCathie stand.

Morrison had a glorious chance in 73rd minute when Jamie Reid headed out a Bradshaw cross into his path. Unluckily the former Dons man pulled his left footed shot across the goal and wide right.

Paterson cut out a neat ball in from the left to deny sub McCrindle a goal but at the other end Allison certainly had been the quieter until the dying minutes of the game. There was a Dunfermline chance when a Jason Hunter header bounced outside the left goalpost and Williamson might have notched an equaliser but Allison saved the day.
