Moffat aiming for the top

Monday, 1st Sep 2014

Michael Moffat was delighted to take three points home from Stranraer after he had scored the winner just before the midway point of the second half.

"It was a tough game as always when you go down there. You know what you are going to get and it is never easy, so to get the three points was great.

"It was my first goal down there for a wee while. I moved it on to my left foot and when I saw the keeper come out I just put it in the far corner.

"We started well and dominated after getting the goal early doors. We had a few chances to maybe get a second but then we had a player sent off. I don't know how it came about, it was a flick on and the boy got in. Ross has thought that he is going to get there but he was a wee bit late. Once you are the last man there is only one decision to be made."

The 34th minute sending off completely changed the game. Stranraer were allowed back into the game and threatened enough times to have gone in ahead at the interval.

"I thought it was a penalty at first so I was a bit relieved when they got the free kick. I thought we would see it out and get organised. It took a deflection and gave the keeper no chance so we had to re-group as we were under pressure going up to half time. They had a few chances and really went for it. It was important to get in at half time and re-organise."

The sides were evened up just six minutes into the second half and it was Michael 's team mate from Ayr last season, Craig Malcolm who saw red for Stranraer. Michael continued:-

"I know what he is like, he likes to put himself about. He had four or five fouls then he got a yellow card. Some of the boys said that he got a push in the back and maybe put his arm up and punched it in. The ref obviously booked him and then we took control after that.

"We got a goal to put us in front and the last ten minutes were a wee bit backs to the wall. We hung out for two wins in a row. We were favourites to go and win the league and we want to win that to get promoted."

Such is the squad's eye on success that Michael Moffat had checked the league table before he went to speak to the media after the match.

"We are three points off first place. It was important with the break coming that we go into it on a high. There are a few knocks and niggles so the boys will get a good wee rest and come back stronger.

"The break is probably a blessing in disguise since we have been playing a good few cup games in midweek. We will probably have a full squad by the time the next game comes around."
