Martin agrees new deal

Thursday, 14th Apr 2016

The club is delighted to announce that centre back Lewis Martin has today signed a new two year contract.

Lewis began the Allan Johnston era well, starting 22 of the first 24 matches but then a viral infection floored him meaning he was out of action for two months. His start against Forfar Athletic on Saturday was first first top team appearance since 12th December at Ayr. Of his 75 Dunfermline appearance all but three have been starts.

The tall centre back from Bonnybridge is the son of David Martin who played centre back for Alloa, St Johnstone and Dumbarton. Lewis started his football at the local boys club. He attended Denny High School and having been at Rangers from U10s he arrived at Dunfermline at under 17 level in season 2011-12. He credits his coach at Rangers, Alan Boyd as key to his development.

Having starred in the under 20s Lewis was given his first team debut just five days after his 17th birthday. His first senior start was at Somerset Park in December 2013. His progress at Dunfermline was recognised with an invitation to train with Scotland U18 squad that same month.

He won his first international cap the following August playing for Scotland under-19's in a friendly against Belgium. The 18-year-old was named in Ricky Sbragia's squad for the friendly match in Tubize just hours before starring in a Petrofac Training Cup win over Raith Rovers, and made his debut as a second half substitute for Blackburn Rovers Sam Lavelle. Martin was the only Scottish-based player selected that plays outwith the top two divisions for the game, which Scotland lost 2-0.

His first full start for the side was against Norway in a qualification match for the UEFA European Under-19 Championship, in a 1-1 draw which saw the side miss out on automatic qualification to the elite round of qualification.
