- a heart warming story on a cold rainy day in Stranraer

Sam mascot at Stranraer

Lee Couper is a long time DAFC supporter, and like us all, has enjoyed the many highs and suffered lows of following our team. He recently took the time to write to the Club to express how delighted he was to see that the Club had survived and to wish the Pars United board all the very best for the future and hoped that they can take the Club back to where it belongs, in the top flight of Scottish football.

Lee now lives in Northern Ireland, and unfortunately does not get the opportunity to see DAFC play as often as he would like, but does always make sure that any trip home to see his family, has to coincide with a home match!

Lee recalled "My first game was versus Hearts back in 1981, I still remember walking up those steps in the main stand and seeing the pitch for the first time, and being in total awe of it all. I still can hear the noise of the fans and the smell of tobacco, Bovril and pies, it is one of my earliest and favourite memories. My Dad's first game at East End Park was back in 1957".

Sam's first match was not the kindest

Lee considered it was now time for him to take his own son, Sam (age 6), to his first ever football match, but unfortunately due to financial constraints he could not take him to East End Park. However, he thought he would do the next best thing, which living in Belfast, was to take him on a day trip to Stranraer. He asked the Club if it could be arranged for Sam to get a few autographs of the players at the game.

On hearing Lee's request, Jim Jefferies and John Potter did not want to let Sam down, and did more than that, much to the delight of them both!

Jim Jefferies outlined:-
"We arranged to meet Lee and Sam at the team hotel in Stranraer, where we were having our pre match meal. We made sure they not only met the team but got photographs and autographs too. When I asked Sam to lead the team out, I don't think he could believe it!

"This is a proper family Club and we need to reach out at every opportunity and engage with supporters. It was important to us that the day left a lasting impression on Sam, so he now appreciates why DAFC is so close to his Dad and Grandad's heart".

Lee stated:-
"We had the most amazing day, meeting the team, getting a few photos, all the boy's autographs. Then to top it all, Mr Jefferies asked Sam if he would like to be the team mascot for the day, which was just the icing on the cake. I would also like to say that the whole team and everyone associated with the Club were fantastic, a real credit to DAFC. In particular, both John Potter and Mr Jefferies.

"Sam had a truly magical day at Stranraer which made it amazing for both of us. It is immediately apparent to me that Pars United, as the new owners genuinely want to make a real difference and get DAFC back to being a proper family Club, at the heart of the community".
