John Herron - "He fancied me to get a goal, so have a shot if it is on
John Herron was pleased to get off the mark for Dunfermline with his first senior goal in Scotland but he played it down saying that the most important thing was taking the point off Dundee United:-
"It was no more than we deserved but from a personal point of view it is good to get a goal. It was a great ball from Kallum (Higginbotham). I don`t know what he meant by his free kick first to Nat (Wedderburn) but Nat has done well to put it back to him. To be fair wee Paul (McMullan) said to me `get yourself into the box` and he picked my area and he put it right on my head so it was an easy finish."
The Herron celebration was full of emotion and it was especially animated because assistant manager Sandy Clark had been critical of him not shooting enough.
"Me and Sandy have had a thing going on. He says that I do not shoot enough then all week in training when I have been getting the ball I have been shooting.
"I have scored a lot in training this week so he said to me before the match that he fancied me to get a goal so have a shot if it is on. It wasn`t with my foot it was with my head but they all count.
"It was just a bit of banter, I don`t know if everyone knows but I think you would be able to tell by the way we play on the pitch that we have a great squad harmony. We are all close together and that is eleven games now without defeat and you don`t get that without having that."
The draw with United provides a barometer that shows an improvement from the four previous defeats to them this season.
"Since I have been here we have played three games, we missed three penalties in the first game against Dundee United and were unlucky to be defeated. In the cup game and the league we had ten men and we have shown in the last couple of games that we have a standard and did well.
"On Saturday going into the game we had only one thing on our minds, to get three points but we will take the one point just now and move up the league."
John, who will be 23 on Wednesday, is officially still on loan from League Two club Blackpool and he still had time left on his contract there but he has reached a mutual agreement that he will not return.
"I am here until the summer and we will see what happens. There are a few options, I have spoken to a lot of clubs but just now I am just concentrating on playing my games."
John was at Celtic from the age of eight and claims to be unique in having won six doubles there.
"The last two or three years I have always had a run and then had a couple of injuries. The main thing for me is to get my confidence back, I am not fully confident yet I feel that I have a lot more to give. I am only going to get that by playing more and more games."
"I may be young but I am not really stupid. They were bringing in players and making it hard for me to get games. The main thing for any young player is to play games. They were happy with me sitting about the first team on the bench. Being a boyhood Celtic fan it was brilliant but sometimes you have to put your career ahead of your own personal point of view.
"My mind spoke more than my heart. It was hard to leave but I owe a lot to the people there and I still speak to them all, people like John Kennedy. The main thing is coming into a first team and playing football. I am loving that here at Dunfermline."
Before joining Dunfermline John admitted that he was unaware what their league status was.
"I knew that they were a big club and always have been a big club when I was growing up. They were in the SPL and then the Championship. Last year they did well to get out of League One. When I came here and saw the squad that they had, the attributes they had, I thought they should be nowhere where we were.
"We all rallied together, had a chat and said what we had to do better at and improve on. There was only one thing on our mind and that was pushing up the table."
