Glass Cup Quest

Friday, 6th Mar 2009

"If you cannot get up for a game like the one on Saturday you would have a problem. There is a good tradition at this club and it's one we want to keep going."

Stephen Glass missed out on Dunfermline's 2007 Scottish Cup Final because he was cup tied with Hibs. He played in a Wembley Final while at Newcastle but lost 2-0 to Man United. Jim McIntyre scored an equaliser against him in his Scottish Cup Semi Final that Hibs lost 2-1 to Dundee United. The chance of a winner's medal may have been missed for the 32 year old but he is wary that Aberdeen might be just as keen to win this year's Homecoming Scottish Cup:-

"I know that the fans up there are desperate to get silverware back up there. When you draw a First Division team in the cup quarter finals - the only First Division team left - I'm sure they will be thinking that it is a big chance for them to get to the semis."

Dunfermline have been in three cup finals in the last five years and that is a pretty good record for a provincial team and he knows that everyone at the club will believe that it is possible again as soon as they get close to it:-

"It puts expectations and demands on the players from the fans but players want that demand on them anyway because it gives you a bit of incentive to do well. If you cannot get up for a game like the one on Saturday you would have a problem. There is a good tradition at this club and its one we want to keep going."

Aberdeen stand between the Pars and the semi final and the tie has the added interest of having Jimmy Calderwood and Jimmy Nicholl returning to the club they left after losing the 2004 Cup Final to Celtic:-

"They won't want to come back to their old club and get beat so they will be on their guard. I'm sure they know that they will be in for a hard game albeit it is the draw that they wanted. They would rather have had us at home but next best thing is get the First Division team in the cup and avoid any of the Premierleague teams."

East End Park was a fortress under the two Jimmies and it has struggled to emulate that virtually ever since but Stephen and his team mates won't dwell on the current home form:-

"It is a stand alone game for us. Whatever is happening in the league is happening. People keep bringing up our home form but we are where we are in the league, still in touching distance of the leaders,

"We have not had many league games where there are 8000 to 10000 at the game. It is a big crowd and a game we want to do well in.

"In one off game and there is no a big difference between the leagues. We played Dundee United earlier in the season and were unfortunate to get beat 1-0. We could have forced extra time yet they are one of the best teams in that league."

Stephen Glass won a cup winners medal when with Aberdeen - the League Cup Final on 26th November 1995. He played his part in an Aberdeen side that included the likes of Eoin Jess, Duncan Shearer and Billy Dodds:-

"I was a young player, just 19 - obviously first cup final and you think it is going to be like that every year. It doesn't happen like that. We were lucky we were lucky that we were playing a First Division as well. It was going to be a difficult game but if you were at your best you are expected to win especially after beating Rangers in the semi, you are expected to win."
