Gary Mason post Man Utd

Sunday, 18th Jul 2010

"The goals that they scored were good finishes; we could maybe have dealt with a few better but we can only learn from that.

Gary Mason

Gary Mason described Saturday's opponents as a quality team but felt that his team should have done better.

"Losing five goals in any game is not nice but I think we came out in the second half to have a go. Obviously we are disappointed, I know it is pre season games and that it's the start of the season that matters, but we are hurt."

The players and the fans need to realise that the squad Manchester United brought to East End Park was packed full of the very best potential talent in the country and beyond.

"With the players they have got, they got a lift from the early goal. We have got to avoid that. The goals that they scored were good finishes; we could maybe have dealt with a few better but we can only learn from that.

"We have just got to pick ourselves up; we are back in on Monday and we have a game again on Wednesday again, the games are coming thick and fast now. It will be another tough game against Aberdeen; it's our third game and we are at home so hopefully we will show a bit better than we did there."

Gary wore the captain's armband after Austin McCann was subbed at the interval:-

"I was delighted to lead the boys back out, everybody wants to try and be a leader on the park whether it's me or boys at the back. I'm not officially vice captain, the Manager just gave it to me for the second half that's it."

Dunfermline face three SPL teams and a talented Manchester United XI as warm up to the cup and league season. Is there an advantage taking on teams like that our would it have been better taking on Highland League teams?

"There are two ways of looking at it. You could play lower league teams and try and score a few goals to get the confidence up but at the end of the day games against better opposition can only stand you in good stead. They are hard games and we have lost goals but we can learn from that. The more important thing is when the league starts and we want to be ready."
