From Lithuania to Loons

Sunday, 19th Oct 2014

"We passed the ball about well and it was just in the final third that we struggled to create chances.

Lewis Martin returned from international duty with Scotland under 19s in Lithuania and went straight back into the Dunfermline first team. Having been ever present in the first eleven matches of the season Lewis then missed the matches at Stirling and Ayr. His hopes of keeping the Pars winning run going was ended by Dick Campbell's table topping Forfar. Lewis gave his thoughts on the match:-

"We passed the ball about well and it was just in the final third that we struggled to create chances. Obviously it was disappointing to miss the penalty with five minutes to go. If that had gone in it would have finished 1-0 and we would have been top of the league.

"In the first half Scully made a good save from a corner but it was just us all first half. We had plenty time on the ball, they just sat in, every team does that when they come here.

"They kept Hilson and Swankie up to put us under a bit of pressure. As a team we did really well; I would say that we were the better team. They are experienced and it is always tough when we come up against them but I feel that we should have won.

"We were the better team, obviously Ryan Scully kept us in it and we are confident because we still haven't conceded a league goal at East End Park."

During the ten days in Lithuania Lewis was on the bench for the first two games in the section but played in the final match against Norway. That match finished 1-1 but Scotland required to win to be assured of qualifying for the next stage of the European Championships. Now they have to wait to see if they can qualify as a best placed third.

"It was a great experience being away and training with Scotland. Great to be part of the group. There are especially good players in the squad; Liam Henderson plays with Celtic and has played and scored for the first team. Then there are other players from the likes of Rangers who are out on loan. There is one at Stenhousemuir.

"Training with the first team helped me improve as a player and training with Scotland helps too. Next month there is a match against Holland and I'd hope to be part of that."
