Calling for more strike action

Thursday, 21st Jul 2016

Andy Geggan:- "There are boys on that bench that are champing at the bit to get on

Andy Geggan felt that the win over Arbroath had been made all the more difficult due to the heat that the Betfred Cup tie was played in. While the fans enjoyed experiencing what the much debated summer football might feel like, Scotland`s warmest day of the year tested the players.

The Pars captain recognised the importance of getting their competitive season off to a winning start:-"I feel good getting the victory but we weren’t up to our usual standards in the first half. I thought in the second we came in to it a wee bit more and got the goals we needed."

There is little doubt that Arbroath made it difficult for Dunfermline and Andy drew similarities to what happened with visiting teams over the last three seasons:-

"They stayed solid in their 4-4-2 and teams always do that when the come here, it’s a big pitch and they know we like to pass. They made it difficult but we broke them down at the end.

"It’s good to get back into competitive action, we did well in the friendlies getting victories but this is us getting down to the bread and butter now. We want to go far in this cup, just like the others."

Pre season friendlies started back in June with a 3-4 reversal against Partick Thistle but since then recorded a draw at Alloa was followed that by wins at Livingston and then at home to Hearts when the team really began to show that they had developed an understanding. Andy continued:-

"In the first day in training the new signings came in and we gelled straight away. It’s been fortunate we’ve done that but a lot of us are still there from last season. There’s big Nat coming in, and Gavin Reilly. Nothing much has changed."

Nat Wedderburn and Lee Ashcroft were signed, loan deals were done with Gavin Reilly and Paul McMullan arriving. Then this week Kallum Higginbotham has become Allan Joihnston`s fifth new signing for the forthcoming Championship season. While accepting that competition for starting places was getting tougher all the time, Geggs complimented the manager for his business:-

"I think he has done well with the boys that he’s brought in, especially Higginbotham - he’s been a good addition as well. He’s made it difficult for the ones that are starting, there’s boys on that bench that are champing at the bit to get on and you see quality that’s on the bench. It can’t be a bad thing having that quality on the bench."

Andy was delighted to score his fourth goal of the season adding to his strike at Livvy and two against Hearts with a 61st minute goal that was contested by the travelling support who felt that he might have been in an offside position. Andy dismissed that

"Not at all, I can’t even remember what happened. I just remember running through and getting the ball off Moff. Sometimes you make that run to the front post and it goes to the back and vice versa. It’s good with big Ryan running down that right hand side, you’ve always got that option. I am just happy to score it."

The 29 year old midfielder has scored a total of 27 goals since joining from Ayr United in June 2012, adding six last season but he is looking to do better this term encouraged by Allan Johnston who wants to see him get himself into scoring positions:-

"That’s what I’m looking for this year, to get a lot more goals. He’s wanting me to push up a wee bit and get involved in the play."
