Begin better suggests McCabe

Sunday, 4th Oct 2015

"It was a sluggish start if I am being honest and we didn't really do the things well that we have been doing well recently.

Rhys McCabe's second half goal against Albin Rovers gave the Pars the breathing space they were looking for. He was delighted with his 62nd minute debut goal for Dunfermline Athletic, his first since scoring for Sheffield Wednesday against Rotherham in the Capital One Cup in August 2013:-

"I just thought there was a chance to take a touch and go and take a pop. I just caught it sweet enough and to be fair it had a bit of momentum on it. It just bounced in front of the keeper and it was awkward for him. Fortunately he couldn't save it and fortune for us that it went in.

"They don't come often from that distance but the goal came at the right time and settled us down a bit because it was getting a wee bit frantic and trying to rush things. The goal settled our nerves and then we started to pass the ball and show the good team that we are."

Dunfermline had struggled to break down Albion Rovers and the visitors were only two minutes short of making it through to half time with their goal intact. Rhys felt that Dunfermline must start matches better:-

"We started like that in the last game as well but it is not acceptable. There were a few players carrying knocks and had the chance to miss out training so that they were fit and available for the weekend which does hinder your training because you are short in numbers and you are limited in what you can do. That shouldn't be an excuse.

"The players that were available and were 100% fit and ready to play. They have to step up including the lads who have been training as well. They have to show that they are willing to fight and keep their place in the team.

"When we get the early goal it is good for the confidence and we can then dictate the play especially at home. It was a sluggish start if I am being honest and we didn't really do the things well that we have been doing recently.

"Going into the second half the manager has obviously had a word with us and tried to lift our spirits a bit. Once we started playing I think we showed everyone the type of football that we are capable of playing and it must have been a joy to watch really."

Three goals but it could have been more agreed the 23 year old midfielder:-

"Obviously Faissal could have had a penalty but we eventually looked a good team and a real force."

The league takes a break for the internationals next weekend but the Pars will have a Petrofac Training Cup match against St Mirren to fill up their vacant Saturday. Rhys is looking forward to St Mirren Park:-

"They are a big club but we are a big club as well. It is a good surface there, I have played there before it is similar to East End Park. We are more than confident that we can go there and get something from the game.

"We are full of confidence but I think the football that we play and the style - passing it about very quickly will cause any team a problem. Teams in higher divisions maybe think that they will have an easy game against us but then they realise that we can play. I think they can be in for surprise."

Rhys only signed for Dunfermline on 18th September and he admits that it takes time to fit in to a new team and that he is still learning.

"The lads and the coaching staff have been great since I came in and made me feel really welcome. I will focus on my football and take things from there."
