Austin McCann Post Partick

Wednesday, 24th Mar 2010

"We had chances ourselves and we have got to put them away. Thistle got the second goal and we just couldn't get back in the game."

Austin McCann

Austin McCann agreed that Tuesday night's defeat at the hands of Partick Thistle was not in the Pars plans:-

"We have been on a good run recently and we were looking forward to taking three points from our home game but it wasn't to be, it just never happened. We have to get our heads up and go again on Saturday."

Things started to go wrong in 27 minutes when former Cowdenbeath striker Liam Buchanan hit the net only as a consequence of 23 year old keeper Greg Fleming letting the ball go through him and across the line:-

"It was one of the things that happen to keepers now and again. Flem' has dug us out a hole a lot of times earlier on this season, he made a mistake but you have to get on with it. We got back in the game when we equalised which was good. But in the second half we never passed as well as we did in the first half, that is the most disappointing thing."

The Pars captain had sympathy for the keeper who is on loan from Oldham Athletic until the end of the season:-

"He put his hand up and said 'I made a mistake' but as I have said before I have made mistakes this year and everybody else has. Flem' has made a lot of good saves that have pulled us out a hole and got us results. That's the way football is; he will be a massive player for us in the run in.

"To lose the second goal was disappointing for the back four. Donnelly got a free shot at goal and we should have closed him down. We had chances ourselves and we have got to put them away. Thistle got the second goal and we just couldn't get back in the game."

Sitting just four points off the top, there is still optimism around East End Park that the top spot and promotion can be achieved from the eight remaining league fixtures:-

"What we have done in the last few weeks has put us right back in there and with Dundee and Queen of the South drawing we have not lost too much ground but we cannot afford many more results like the one against Thistle; we cannot afford to drop any more points in the tough games coming up. We have to play Queens, Dundee and Ross County starting with Queens on Saturday. We have a good record down there and hope to take three points."

Austin McCann v Partick Thistle

Austin described the hamstring injury to David Graham in the second half of the match against Partick as a massive blow.

"Davie has been doing really well and I don't know how bad the injury is. Hopefully he will not be out for too long."

Ross Campbell could have been a super sub had he taken his great chance just after replacing Graham:-

"It was a good chance but he wasn't long on the park. I am sure the next chance Ross gets for us he will stick it away for us."

Austin's reaction to the suggestion that he might need to play upfront was a definite no, warning that no one wants to watch him playing there either:-

"It is the one position where we couldn't afford to lose players but Ross Campbell came in and did well, Willie Gibson will be back for Saturday so that gives us another option upfront. We will dust ourselves down in the next two days and take a head count on Saturday to see who is available."
