Michael was re-united with his former boss, Allan Johnston when he signed for the Pars in June 2015. He made 41 appearances including three off the bench in his first season at East End Park, chipping in with three goals but was an important provider of crosses that finished in the opposition net.

He got valuable first team experience there and in December of that year broke into the Aberdeen first team. His five first team appearances in 2008-09 was followed by 39 the next.
The arrival of Scott Vernon limited his first team outings the following season and on 31 August 2011, he joined Stockport County on a six-month loan. When he returned to Aberdeen at the end of November after sustaining an injury, he had made 15 appearances and scored four goals for County in the Blue Square Premier League (Conference).
On 31 August 2012, Paton was released by Aberdeen when Craig Brown deemed him surplus to requirements. After a break of six months he signed for Queen of the South. Michael made 71 appearances for the Doonhammers scoring eleven goals.
